P/J Active wiring buzz HELP please!

On my newest custom built bass I decided to go with a P/J pickup combination.

I have the fender Vintage 62 P pickup in the neck position and the Fender Samarium Cobalt Noiseless J in the bridge position.

I am also using a 2008 Fender Active system that they put in their American series J basses.

I tried wiring everything passive first hoping I would like it but it wasn't happening. So I pulled the active system out of my custom fretless and put it in the new bass I built. It was dead quiet in the fretless.

Both passive and active had the same buzz that goes away when I touch any metal part with my hands.

The P pickup also has a nasty loud buzz if I touch the pole pieces or the screws.

The bass is well shielded with 4 coats of shielding paint and Copper foil in the pickup cavities and on the cavity cover plate.

I’ve done lots of soldering in my life so the joints are well done.

I also had to reverse the white/black wire on the P because of a phasing issue but that worked out fine... I want the noise gone! My Sadowsky is dead quiet through the same bass amp.

Any Help out there?

The wires were reversed at the pot, not at the pickup.

The buzz also gets bad when I'm touching the screw on the P pickup cover with my thumb and playing the strings at the same time.

Are there no electronic guys out there tonight with a possible solution?

Put a strip of copper tape under the bridge to enhance the ground bridge wire contact. A bit like the old jazz's.

Are you using tapewound strings perchance? I have some on my fretless j with a retro j preamp and Di Marzio js and I'm having the same problem.

DR roundwounds and I also tried the copper tape, thanks for your replies. Maybe the fender 62 P pickup is just crap? I've never had good luck with anything Fender over the last 45 years except my first bass. It was a 69 Fender Tele bass that I got in and I loved that thing, wish I still had it.

I'm trying different stuff and it's still really noisy, what a pain!

I cured most of the buzz by taking all groung wires and removing them from the back of all pot casings. I then soldered them to a metal standoff ring to the shielded control cavity wall. This is the way my Sadowsky is wired.

I had done this in previous builds and it worked well but I decided to follow the Fender wiring diagram from their site to the letter on this job. Once again I was done in by Fender on their own parts. It's time for a total move away from anything to do with Fender bass parts!!!
