Perhaps an instrument with a P/J configuration will do it for me. I mean, after all, I like the tone of the Jazz bass’s bridge pickup. The P-bass’s neck pickup also sounds nice.

Here’s a list of contenders
Fender Duff McKagan P Bass
Fender Active P Bass Special
Fender Aerodyne Classic Precision Bass Special
G&L SB-2
Lakland Bob Glaub
Lakland Duck Dunn
Spector
Warwick Streamer Stage I

That's all I can think of right now, but please, feel free to recommend some other instruments.

Man... G&L SB-2 is definitely going to be the next bass for me. But it is hard to find an original. So I'll probably end up going tribute. I personally hate fender because of their terrible low quality... they should consider becoming a little more modern. G&L is close to fender, but I feel has a much great sound and quality. Plus they make a handsome bass.lol

Gotta consider a (P-bodied) Sadowsky Metro "hybrid":

You can get one for ~$2000, less than half the price of a
full-on custom NYC Sadowsky P/J!!! :hyper:

Fender Reggie Hamilton Standard. With U.S. pickups and active/passive operation, it's great. I'd probably replace the P pickup with a Fralin, but it's excellent as is. There's the Fender Frank Bello signature too, which looks like a total rock machine along the lines of the SB-2.

Speaking of which, if you like to solo the J bridge pickup, the G&L SB-2 isn't for you. That pickup has low output, and was designed more as a tone control than a pickup meant to be soloed. It's a fantastic bass though, with an awesome, hard-hitting P-bass tone and lots of tonal variations from blending the pickups and ajusting the volume controls. I sure do love mine. :bassist:

That is what I did......finding a used one (there are several in the for sale section now) and having the mod done will cost you just above a grand...not bad if you ask me......have it done by Lakland since they can match the Fralin pickup currently installed and you will only have to buy one pick up.

and the sound.....well.......fantastic!

suggestion - get stacked knobs so you have independant tone and volume for each pick up - it adds to the variability and keeps the two knob look of the P....

Of course if you like the thinner neck - get a Duck Dunn and do the same thing - though there are not may available used right now.....

here's my Fender Jazz Bass Special ... they were made in Japan ... very nice instruments and not at all expensive second hand ... you can find them on eBay all the time. HarmonyCentral has some good reviews of these basses ...

Of course they come in fretted as well ... :) Also, there is available "Power" jazz bass specials that have active pick ups ... a little more rare though ...

Oh yeah ... it is a jazz bass ... they just have precision bodies is all ... the neck is the slim jazz neck and that's really what makes it a jazz bass anyway... right? No? haha

I haven't found a PJ that sounds better than my SB2. Although I have a Lull PJ coming this week. The TF sig is definitely a nice bass as well..it's my favorite configuration and I don't think you can go wrong with any of your choices.

Fender has recently reissued it as the "Duff McKagan P bass". I'm actually thinking of buying one of those.
