P/J instruments

I've got two.

My #1 -- A Sadowsky PJ that converts to JJ:

and a Reverend Rumblefish PJ (also converts to a Jazz):

Two totally different tones. The Reverend sounds more like you would expect a hollowbody to sound -- deep, ballsy, and thick. The Sadowsky sounds great, but more like a traditional PJ.

They not the same as a normal P/J bass but they surely have nice tone and sound on that bass. Lots of people say the Streamer Stage 1 is one of the bass sound bass from Warwick.

And many say that Thumb is their best sounding bass, and Corvette is their best sounding bass and so on :D And u kno, all of them are right! Coz, how many people - that many opinions!
Anyway, i love streamer stage 1, and it sounds killer too!

To be honest, if you are looking for anything Fender-ish you do NOT want to look at Spectors. They have a great tone, but its not your traditional Fender P/J type of tone. I am actually going to be moving one of my Spectors for a Fender soon.

Of the Fender style P/J basses out there, the Tony Franklin fretted model is my favorite because of the maple fingerboard and the fact that the pickups are matched to have completely even output. I'll probably wind up with a Reggie Hamilton Jazz, but I'm ok with that. As long as the J pickup is hot enough; the P/J I had in the past was louder with the P p/u soloed than it was with both pickups on full. That made it tough to solo the P p/u, which I wanted to do on anything where I wanted more of a traditional tone. If you have a hot enough J pickup, this isn't as much of an issue.

If you really want the best of both worlds get one of these - a Stu Hamm Urge II. I picked up a used one a few months ago and I can honestly say that great care was given by Fender to maintain authentic P and J tones. The pickups are custom wound with provisions for any combination and the pre is very well voiced. I prefer them all on, but they sound great when used as strictly P or J. A very nicely done instrument - kudos to Fender for not just throwing something together. If something happened to it I would definitely get another. On the pricey side new, but used they're a steal.

This could be said of any bass which has a P-J configuration of EMG pickups. The Guild Pilot comes to mind.

I'm pretty much completely in love with my Peavey USA Millenium Standard. The "P" Pickup is from Reverend. Great P tone, and I don't really care about the J pickup.

I considered the Candy Apple Red but went for the Dolphin Gray...I also thought about the Gunmetal but was a bit afraid that it would look too blue....I was burned by a MIM Jazz in Midnight Blue that turned out to be friggin' purple...I felt like a glam rocker!

I love the Yamaha Broad Basses...my first bass was a BB300...P-bass set up and it weighed as much as a picnic table....but it was a great bass in 1985 for $250....

Someone mentioned the Guild Pilot...I still kick myself for not getting one when I had the chance in the 80's...are there any still floating around?
