P? J? Who cares?!

Play what YOU like and LIKE what you play....this is the motto I always say. And therefore I play a P but mostly a Ray, but Im not against playing the right J. :smug::bassist::hyper:

Rules violation! TB wokerati protocols demand that you must be vehemently against something.

Please find something or someone to hate. ;)

The real difference for me is, I prefer the chunkier neck on the P, had a few Js and just could not bond with the neck.

Variety is the spice of life, haha. I have the opposing issue. While I rather enjoy the sound and feel of a Precision, I can't get my freaky little hands around the neck. A Precision with a Jazz neck may be something I look into in the near future.

It’s not about the debate and of course each musician should select the gear that suits him/her best. That said, sometimes it’s fun and instructive to hear about what other people are using as this provides inspiration and information.

Say I’m considering a particular bass. I’d rather hear from other TBers what it's like than just read the marketing copy from the manufacturer.

I’ve been seeing a lot of threads on this “debate” coming up lately, recently seems to be more frequently than normal, anyway.

I’ve never understood why this is something that needs to be debated. Why is it a question that needs an answer? If you want to play a P, play a P. If you like Jazz basses better, great! Music Man? Rickenbacker? Alembic? Active or passive? Rounds or flats? What you choose to play shouldn’t matter to anyone but you.

Your choices are your own, and it truly doesn’t matter what Talkbass or anywhere or anyone else has to say. If you like the noise you’re making, then carry on and send anyone else packing along with their opinions. There is no debate to be had, an no consensus to be reached. This isn't some bass guitar Thunderdome where two models enter, and one model leaves.

The only answer I’ll accept to J vs. P is “both!”. :p

I hear you. At the end of the day, despite all the nit picking that goes on, they are both electric basses, 2 of many many incarnations of electric basses made all over the world by different manufacturers that serve the same purpose musically. Anything else reflects personal taste which may or not be universal.

I totally care about what *I* play, but I totally don’t care what anyone else plays. There’s (thank god) plenty of room in music for all, and if there were only one, I’d likely be first in line to either quit or invent something.

It strikes me as juvenile, something I might have got tangled up by back in my 30s and earlier, thankfully I’ve achieved maximum fool and accept that I now know nothing.

I've often thought we should have a separate forum for Fender and FSO and then a forum for all the other BETTER basses.

;-)
ohhhhhhhh be careful, I currently own a Fender,,,,seem to cant keep one though. Get one, play it for a while, quit liking it, sell it, not own one for years, buy another,,, sell it, on my 5th one right now, back to a passive jazz, I need to keep this one to quit the madness!
