P/J Wiring Issue

I have an odd wiring demon going on in my P/J.

The controls are Vol/Blend/Tone. When soloed, each pickup works fine. However, when you crank the blend towards the middle, two of the strings (E&A or D&G) gradually lose volume and bass response until you hit equal balance.

At first first it sounded a lot like a polarity issue, so I swapped the wires on one of the pickups, but it just switched which strings that lose volume.

I'm pretty stumped- any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like one half of your P is out of phase. Try swaping the wires at just one of the P coils.


(FIY, some J pickups have two side-by-side coils as well, so it may be the J instead, if this is the case.)

Sorry for a lame question, but this would be at the pickup itself?

yep.

A pair of P coils can be out of phase and you don't know because they sense different strings.

I'd think it would hum a bit when solo'd though.
