ive got a bc rich bich witha single p in it and i hated the sound of the stock pickup so i just replaced it with a bart i had thinking ide get a clearer tone. unfortunatly the bart didnt have the grunt with crystal highs i was hoping for. im looking for a pup that will sound clear with distortion and be clear when power chords are played. anybody have any sugestions? i was kinda thinking to try a quarter pounder but ive never used duncans so i dont know if it would be too much in the mids. also i use the lowest 4 strings from a 5 string set on it so i can tune it to b or c.

IME Aero does a good full-range passive pickup. (Not the cheapest solution but I'm still a big fan.)
Maybe EMG? (If you have room for a 9V.)

Those stock NJ pickups were Gotoh, basically a MIJ DiMarzio knockoff. They have problems with microphonics and they're just not as good as the real thing. I always change them.
The Duncan QP is a great pickup, but alnico doesn't have the high end of a ceramic pup.
Go with a real DiMarzio. If you want more highs get the Model P. If you want more beef and grunt get the Will Power Middle. The Split P might have the "crystal highs" you're looking for - but it will be overly scooped sounding, so not a good candidate for distortion.

Dimarzio model P with the adjustable pole peices raised just a little above the pup housing. Little more so on the E&A or B&E strings. pair it with nice 2band preamp stacked bass/treble pot like the Basslines blackout and youd have a very nice P pup bass imo. Not quite as crunchy a sound as the dimarzio P as the BC Rich P's their best version have covered top (no exposed pole peices like the cheaper models have), but still the dimarzio model P has decent crunch factor. Which aids articulation imo.
yeah the stock pup is muddy weak and dosent have any definition. sounds like a dimarzio p or split p is what im looking for i like scooped mids and crunch as im playing old school death metal. im trying to go for a classic shane embury distortion with a scooped mids crisp crunch if possible.
scooped + distortion doesn't work. you can try it, but the distortion sounds like crap. examples - MXR M-80 where you can't disable the color (scoop) switch on the distortion channel. or any EMG with distortion.
distortion eats mids. for good tone you gotta feed it.
