I have an American Series P Bass with the S1 switch. It switches
between series (up) and parallel (down). The only time I play it in the
parallel position is to remind myself that I like the series position much
better. The series connection sounds louder and mellower to me.
Save yourself the time, hassle and cost. Don't bother adding the switch.

That seems to be the general consensus on the matter.
Most people find the parallel setting useless.
Remember, P bass coils are essentially half pickups.
In series, they "add up" to a full pickup, but in parallel, you get a weak output.
