P Vs J Fender american

well i have both, i had the jazz first than i bought the p after. I do have the jazz with the s 1 switch and it does a damn good imitation of a precision bass. if you can only have one right now id say the jazz and if you can get one with the s1 switch.

unless neck preference is also a factor, i like both style necks personally. I find in the mix a jazz cuts and growls and a precision sits perfectly and roars. from my experience. Nothing beats my american standard jazz live to date, however i haven't tried my new modulus quantum 4 yet or my american precision with ti jazz flats yet.

I wish the mods would allow us to troll these kinds of threads unmoderated :p :D. 4chan, anyone? It would be sooooooooo much fun.

And OP, if I've offended you in anyway it was unintentional and I apologize but these threads come up almost daily. Here's a respectable answer:

Play the one you like the best.

This is like Tele vs Strat. Which is better depends on whether you're Jeff Beck or Keith Richards...

Some of us are P players, some of us have "J" tattooed on our foreheads from birth. And some want both. Or neither.

Play whatever moves you, and don't worry about what anyone else thinks.

I thought i wanted a P sound, but couldn't handle one when i started so i bought a Jazz. I loved the feel, and with 62RI pickups its sound is amazing. But its not a P. So i finally bought a P its still harder to handle since i bought the 59RW but it has that sound.

It comes down to what do you prefer and what sounds well for what your playing. Just get both!

Main differences?

-Neck shape
-Body shape
-Number of pickups
-Type of pickups
-String spacing
-Tone controls
-Tone
-Number of fanboys/fangirls

Did I get everything? I think this subject has been pissed out for ages now. If you're looking for a opinions they're almost all over the Basses subforum and a few others even without actually using the search function.

The one thing you're missing there is: "The P looks cooler" part.:hiding:

Besides that, nice post.

Come on people, it is not just because the bloke has played for so long that he has to know these things. Maybe he was less worried about equipment and more worried about the music.
The main differences I see are the neck and the pick up and sound.
The neck of the Precision is fatter and wide, while the jazz has a more "girly" neck, smaller.
The jazz has two pick ups, and the precision has one, so you have more tonal options with the jazz. For the differences in the tones, search for some songs that you know that feature these two different instruments.
I hope it helps you.
