P5 Club?

I took your advice on the Lakland. Incredibly impressive instrument. The passive mode really sold me, and the B string is so defined.

Played an American P5 as well. It was $1200 and I just could not justify that pricing for the work I am doing. I need more variety. I also did not like the B string as much. That being said, the Fender P5 was pretty easy to play, and was a great bass.

Congrats, AC (if I read your post correctly, that is)! Please post pics when you get the chance.

here are my pair:

the B on these is so resonant!

NOT MY LAST :ninja:

That bass on the right is sick. Super vintage look. Reminds me of an old school jazz bass.

I think I am making the switch from being a Fender guy to Lakland. Pretty crazy since I have been a Fender player in the studio since I was 16, and im in my 30s now.

There are so many people on this list who seem to be very happy with their Fender MIA P5. I wonder if Fender is aware of the home run they hit. One thing that I noticed, and was remarked on this forum several times, is the low weight of this bass relative to most production 5 stringers. This is a big plus to me. The bass is not perfect, IMO, but is an excellent product for the price. One of these days I am going to invest in a similarly featured custom bass from Lull, Sadowsky, Valenti, or Nordstrand. The Fender will then be a backup. But for now, I am really enjoying my P5.

I think my biggest issue was it was $1200 and I could get the Lakland 5502 for $100 more.

Just having that tonal variety for my work is huge. Active or Passive mode..etc. I also really prefer the B on a 35" scale.

But when I buy a Fender MIA I always by used. That is when the real value kicks in.

I will be a member of the P4 MIA club next ;)

Yeah, i've put money into my P5 to customize it, but that is not because there was anything wrong with the original pickup or controls. It was just personal preference. There are a couple of small things that keeps it from being the perfect bass for me. one is the tuners. they are ok, but not the best. I can easily remedy that with some hipshots of course. I would prefer a flatter fingerboard. This is only really an issue past the 12th fret. Otherwise the neck and fb are very comfortable to me. If I had a custom build, I would use a pau ferro fingerboard. I just prefer it. The maple board is fine with me though. Finally, I would like it in fiesta red. That I can have someone do at some time. In the end, I will still spend far less than 2K on a bass that is really a 9.5/10 for me. A good buy, if you ask me.

I'm curious as to what the difference would be since the OEM tuners are made by Hipshot.

I'm loving that single coil Valenti that Chef posted a pic of.
