P5 Club?

Oooo... another reason to post my gear :smug:

Here is my Benavente 51P fretted 5 (ignore the fretless 6 P and 80's Ibanez)

I've been gassin' for a P bass for a awhile, but only like playing 5 strings. I ended up with a MTD 5 string CRB and I'm liking it a lot. I had to shield it and I put D Addario Chromes on it. I'm still waiting for the Chromes to break in to get the sound I'm looking for. I've been spoiled by my four year old Chromes on my GGS fiver. This will stay in the arsenal.

Also I have this 5 string SX P bass shape but with single coils. I think I'll someday put a P bass pick up in the neck position.

I've always wanted to try one of the MTD's. Came pretty close to getting one before I found my Fender.

New strings aside, how's the tone? Would you say it's voiced more traditionally, or more modern?

Well, I have never owned a fender P bass, but I would say that I can dial up traditional P bass tones no problem. I have heard reports that the CRB has more mids but I'm not sure. I tend to EQ my amp mods up a bit anyway.

I've never heard of these before - I like the look, and I see they can be had in black/maple. Hmmmm...

I started out with a CRB 5. I still have it ( I have tried selling it but you can't give these things away)

It sounds good but side by side with my P5 you can really tell the differences.
I love the asymmetrical neck but the 1 3/4 nut is way to thin for me. Above the 5th frett the strings are stacked on each other.
Plan on keeping it forever unless you want to sell it for under $200

Why does fender stay 34 inch on this? uggh. Whats a great 35 version of this around the same price that is passive, has a fast neck and sounds just like a P bass?

Because that is what people want.

I could have bought a Lakland but hated the 35".

You do not need a 35" scale bass to have a good B string.
You just need the right strings and the right set up.
There are a lot of 35" 5ers out there. If you want a nice 34" P bass your only choices are Fender and Sadowsky.

Get a Lakland
