P5 Club?

It was hard to point out what was "off" with the Dingwall....

Dingwall build quality is outstanding and I'm sure the Super P is a marvelous bass, but I suspect what was "off" for you was scale length. Essentially, 35" scale put me off of my Lull P5, and with Dingwall, I believe the fanned fret scale lengths run from 34" G to 37" low B. For many the Dingwall has superior clarity on the lower strings, but the extended scale changes the beast into something that's not quite Fender: neither better nor worse (that's subjective), but definitely different.

Yes...good point Fuzzbass, although I was fully and completely aware of the scale length difference and I am sure that was good part of the "off-ness" but there was another element at work too...regardless...to each his own for sure...I respect the hell out of what the Dingwall folks are doing and wish them all the best...

All that being said, for the sticker price on a Fender P5, albeit a mass produced item, it is pretty hard to go wrong if you are a "P Bass guy or girl" looking for a fiver!

The only adjustment I made was lowering the action on the B and E. I didnt need as much extra clearance off of the fingerboard to play cleanly. It's not a big sonic difference from the regular XL set.

Had mine since 2010 when I ordered it from GC to me straight from the factory.

The only tweak I did was the PU height, a micro-move.

Have gone thru the stock Fender strings, D'Addario Chromes, GHS Fatties, and am stuck on DR Low Rider Nickels.

HOWEVER...I am really liking DR Sunbeams on my 2002 Precision. They're a bit more taut than the Low-Riders, but the tone out of both types have me thinking I've found the right strings.

Run them old-school tone, an LH1000 thru LDS 2 x 10 cabs. Backin' the mids off just a bit.

Just to clarify, it is 35" on the B to 32" on the G

So, I am so very close to pulling the trigger on an Am Std black n maple P5. Before I do it, I need to know where to get a BWB pickguard for it! Where are you guys getting these custom guards? I only see 4-banger guards. ][/QUOTE]

Here's where I got mine, perfect fit. Came within a week.

Wow, I didn't realize there were so many pickguard choices! Very cool!

Guys... I just did it. I succumbed to GAS and pulled the trigger on a 2012 Black/Maple Am Std P5 from Musician's Friend. It was B-Stock aka Level 2/Good (showroom) condition. They threw on a 15% dealio on top of it bringing this bad boy to me at $994 shipped.

Did I get a good deal? I need your honest opinion as a barometer of my guilt/excitement :) I like to think I did well considering MF jacked the new price to $1459, but I would like some opinions.

Regardless, I can't wait!

Also, thanks for the PG link... going to order it next week after I inspect my new purchase!

Congrats & welcome to the fold! :D

IME you got a great deal - I'm assuming the case, case candy & warranty were included?

Nothing wrong with a $465 discount on a lightly used 2012 P5 - I think you'll be very happy w/ your purchase.

Don't forget pics when you get it!

Thanks! I feel 50% better already! :hyper: Case and candy are included. The description said no manufacturer's warranty, but Fender has a lifetime warranty, right? Regardless, this is under the umbrella of MF's 45-day satisfaction policy if there are neck issues, etc.

Which reminds me... these basses don't have the micro-tilt pockets do they?

You just need to tort the PG and then it will rule.

(Belated) NEW BASS DAY!

Here she is, my first 5 in about 7 or 8 years! I love how this bass retains the magical P look, feel, and sound while adding a low B. The neck isn't too much wider than a 50s P!!

I'm usually a flats guy and I have a set of Chromes ready to go, but I thought I'd check out these new balanced nickels (with a matched B from BassStringsOnline). So far, I really like em! When I get over my slap-happy phase, I'll switch back to flats to see what suits me best.

Just one question: any suggestions for string spacing. This is my first time using threaded saddles. Right now, I have each string centered b/w poles and the spacing feels okay, but I am open to advice... thanks!!

That black looks awesome with the black guard. I have held off from getting a second P5 for years because I wasn't excited about any of the other color combinations besides the oly white. That black/black/maple may look even better to me.

Thanks. TB has given me a slight black n maple fetish. I love it. I was also having little buyer's remorse for buying my Rick in Fireglo instead of Jetglo (black) since the P4 I sold to get my P5 was a also a burst. Now that I have a black bass, I feel I can have my evil black on black cake and eat it too.

Bump on the spacing question...

Bump on the spacing question...

Here's an 'on the gig' response...

From what I can tell from your photos (congrats again, by the way!), the spacing looks about right.

I have mine dialed in pretty well - for the B, E & A strings I have them seated in the middle saddle slots. The D & G are in the slot second from the left. Here's a photo I just took in-between sets (complete w/ Monster cable making an appearance below the bridge :) ):
