P5 Club?

Here's my P5:

DSCI0004.jpg

Has a lot more wear and tear now, and an Aggie OBP 3 Preamp+Nordstrand P5.

Beautiful bass. I have the same but black w/ toitose pick-up.

I am seriously considering a Skyline 55-64. Fuzzbass'' observation that the 35' scale makes the P-bass tone more modern is nice to know. I really like thunderous 35' B strings, and a slightly modern tweak of the P-bass tone would work for me.

I got a 5502 after demoing the American P5, and I do think the pickups make the biggest difference, but still for me, the B string to me sounds a lot better on the 35inch scale.

Talked to a couple producers who have made some big records about recording 5s. Many hate it due to lack of definition and floppines, but they both said the 35 inch scale helped change their attitudes.

One now has a 35 inch 5er as his main studio bass, and the other wants me to track with mine for him.

I'd be interested in seeing how you like the 55-64. I feel like Lakland is the way to go for a killer 5 string, but that is one guy's opinion.

"they both said the 35 inch scale helped change their attitudes."

IMO: great construction, great wood, great components and the right string for the bass make more diff than scale length. I've played 35's that sucked. I've played 34's that were great. And: vice versa.

Currently, all my 5's are 34*:
Sadowsky, Valenti, Nordstrand, Alleva
I think those guys can all be said to know what they're doing.

(*The lone 35 I have left is a Reverend BH5, which also has a nice B String)

Agree, I just like that scale length and tension on the string. To me it makes a difference, but it is not everything.

I personally prefer 35, and maybe just me selling it that way to the producers added some placebo in there too..but these guys are too good and would have probably called me out..lol.

It's just personal preference..I almost want to play 4 strings with the 35 inch scales now..lol..just really like that extra tension.

cool.
if it works for you; that's totally hard to dispute :D

I've ahd several 35's over time, but, the bulk of my toolbox is 34; and, even though it's a small and mostly not noticeable diff in therms of scale length, I prefer having my stuff be all the same. So, that's the way I went.
Clearly, there a great basses in both types, and beyond that, it's a personal pref thing, and ymmv.

Greetings from the North,

I don't mind one way or the other as long as the B isn't flubby. Both of my Reverends are 35's and my Fender P5 is a 34' and the B is great for me. I did have concerns about the P5's scale length before I tried it and was pleasantly surprised when I did. I may just pick up another one to put a set of round wounds on.

Guys what strings do you use?

I'm considering a 5 fender p. but I'd like to use it with flats.
Anybody got good results?

And anybody could share some sound demoed??? :)

Cheers

I use TI flats on my P5, generally speaking I'm happy with them as TI flats always sound great on a P-bass so if you like that tone on a 4 string you'll get the same result except with the addition of a low B. I also like Chromes and have them on a Jazz 5 string, they're punchier but not as warm as the TIs.
