Golly, that Squier Vintage Modified P5 for $299 is really tempting.

Someone 'round here who just bought one of these said the pickup output level and tone were very close to the Fender AmStd P5. Just has a gloss neck and no thru-body stringing.

Basswood body too, IIRC. But my Classic Vibe 60's P (basswood) sounds pretty darn good...
Alder & basswood are in the same ballpark tone-wise (IMHO).
Y'know, for a basswood body, that looks pretty good in a sunburst. Still, anything red is best for me - but I already have two Fender P5s in a similar color.

I just left the club...shipping away my Fender P5 to Texas...
...it WAS a great bass...thee most non offensive sounding fiver that was great in a band mix situation always...
...maybe I will throw a Squier P5 in the stable to ease the pain in the future...great basses for sure those Fender P5's...underrated in my view!

It sounds a lot brighter than I expected, could just be the strings though.
It's my first passive bass in a very long time (2 basses with EMGs, one bass with an preamp) and I'm still tweeking my signal chain to compensate for the lower output.
I'm pretty sure its going to kill with the band.
I can't believe how close these two basses are. Except for the obvious American features, these basses play similar, sound very close, and look fantastic. As I said in another thread, fantastic bass at such a great price point.
I'm considering parting with my 2008 Am Std P5, too. In my case, I'm probably going to be looking to trade it for a post 2008 Am Std Jazz 5 with a rosewood fingerboard.
I like the P5, but I've got a Precision build in progress, and that's really going to fill my P-Bass needs. And a 5 string Jazz might fill my needs a little better right now.
