PA for wedding band

Hi guys. Just after some advice really. I play in a 5 piece wedding band (pop rock covers) and we are looking to upgrade our P.A. Currently at the minute we play through 2 x Mackie SRM450v2 with what used to be 2x SRM1801 subs (but one broke and the other is on its way, terrible subs!)

Anyway, we put everything through the PA. Kick, Overhead, Bass guitar, Guitar, Keys and Vocals. I find that the Mackie 12s can't handle all this so its time to upgrade. We normally play in front of anywhere between 200 to 500 people.

The SRM450vs only give out around 400watts each so clearly we need more power. I always find they don't handle bass and kick well and they always get drown out. It only seems to be the very low end from the subs that we hear and very little definition from the kick and bass. I know some would say EQ is the problem but it seems more of a power/clarity issue.

So what do you guys recommend? I had looked at dual 12 inch speakers. We have a good 3K to spend.

If you’re getting that much from the bass and kick in the 450s, and you get nothing but the extreme low end from the current subs, it sounds to me like you have the crossover set too low. Push it up to 150 or so and you’ll probably be fine with a better pair of subs.

The active crossover in the mackies is set at 125HZ I think. You can't adjust them.

I've had great luck with the K series stuff. K12's on KW-181's kicks hard. They sound good out of the box and are very reliable. They are also very efficient power wise. Up to 5 boxes on 15 amps is what they claim. 6 year warranty when you register them on line.

I think the K series stuff is overpriced frankly.

On the other hand though, I was just at a show last night (albeit an avant garde one, so lots of electronics and no full bands) and there was just a newer EON set (sub and 15" mains) and it actually sounded really good in the small/medium sized room it was in. The mains were also on really high stands (the crank kind) so that probably helped tame some upper mids and highs. The older EONs I'm not a huge fan of, but the newer ones seem a lot better, and that would certainly come in below your budget. I don't know what your current mixer is, but you could also probably throw in a digital mixer as well.
