I built an amazing PA from the plans at Billfitzmaurice.com -- are you afraid of wood-working? For jazz, a pair of Jack10 full-range speakers would work, coupled with a Crown XTi1000 and a used mixer (in a small rack) and you're set. I recommend heading there just to pick up knowledge on sound in general.
