Hello all. This Is my first post and my first look at EUB's. I have been reading some of the post here and around the web and it seems Pace (4 string) and Palatino (VE-550) both make a relatively affordable and similar in price instrument. Both appear to have there loyal proponents but I have found only limited comparisons. I would like to hear from someone who has experienced both. What are the major differences? Hollow body vs Solid? Is the through body neck better than the bolt on? How is playing with the tripod base vs a straight stick? Is it more difficult to get to the high notes on the Palatino because of the body? How are the electronics? Are they passive or active? Which sounds better out of the box? I've seen a lot of mods for the VE-550 which ones make the best improvements for the $$$? How is the fretboard radius on each? Machine Heads? Anything else you might think important. Also, if you know of any other models, I'd like to hear about those too. Keep in mind I have a cap of about $525. Thanks for the help. I'm really looking forward to getting into an EUB, Cheers!

Double Bass Pace vs Palatino

The f.b. radius on the Palatino is 3". String length is 41". Changing the strings could be the best upgrade for the $$.
Sold my Pace because they can't be played with the bow, They are also short scale and more of a EB on end. Go with the Palatino, mine has been a great instrument for me for the last two years. Never fails me and sounds fantastic with the addition of a good set of upright strings and a couple mods from the forum. Plus that the Palatino looks lots better.

The Pace is an EUB in only the most broad definition of the term. The one I played sounded like a cheap electric bass.
The Palentino, while far more DBish in feel and design the the pace, seems to need considerable upgrades to work to its full potential. I played a stock one once and was not impressed.
Have you thought about the Ergo? Same sub 1k price range, but way more playable out of the box w/ real 3/4 DB feel. Handmade in the USA, too! You'll probably want to throw on some new strings , but thats it as far as upgrades. I used to have one, and I miss it.
