Page turner for my iPad?

So, I just spent a couple days in Nashville and I can honestly say, I don't think it matters that much. I was shocked, SHOCKED, at how many artists were on stage using an iPad or other tablet device (some even their phone with the tiny little screen) and having to "scroll" by swiping their finger in the middle of a chord progression or something. So clearly it's not really an issue, or someone could literally make a small fortune by selling a good app in that town! :roflmao:

Yeah, agree with you. I think that’s the only way they can deal with the volume of songs in the catalogue they have to play and one-off requests… it’s standard equipment there with every mic stand having an i-clip on it.

Was there before Covid and I watched a country band at Kid Rock’s take a $100 request for I Can’t Drive 55… they said they’d never played it and all grabbed their phones and said we need a couple mins to listen to it, to learn this real quick… 2 mins later they ripped through it. ;) It was pretty cool to watch, they didn’t nail it but did a great version of it with a little twang and style.

Yeah for sure. We had a private event, basically rented out an entire bar, and had our own performer. It was a gal playing acoustic guitar and singing. She made a killing off our drunk party, they were throwing twenties in the bucket left and right and when she got a request for Wagon Wheel by Darius Rucker she said "I wouldn't play that for less than $100, that song haunts me" it was a mad rush by a couple guys to drop a hundo in the bucket. :roflmao:
But there were several times throughout the night she said "Lemme listen to that for a second...." and then she'd rip through it like she'd been playing it for years.
There was also a guy at Blake Shelton's airport bar just playing requests and he also had to listen to a couple, then ripped through them like it was old hat.

The level of talent in that town is humbling, inspiring....and awesome.

Works fine once I figured out the orientation button which wasn't that intuitive for me. The problem I have is I will tap it on the beat to turn the page, and need to focus to stop tapping it on the beat. Consequently, I probably turn the page with my finger 2/3 of the time.

I bought this one because I didn't know if I would like it or not.

I use Piascore.

My favourite is still the products by PageFlip. I had a Cicada, which I bought in 2007 and used until I somehow lost it after a show in 2019, then I upgraded to a PageFlip Firefly. The little LEDs on the pedals really help in dark pits or stages...In all the years I had the Cicada, I think I changed the batteries in it twice. It was really efficient.

The only issue with these is that they don't really honour song shortcuts. So in ForScore if you bookmark your DS and your Coda positions, the pedal can't bounce between them - you still have to touch the iPad to register those.

In my experience, no there isnt any real benefit, but I do subscribe as a thanks to the developers as I like their work and business ethic.

ForScore has transformed my day job as a mix / recording engineer. I have hundreds of full conductor scores with me in my iPad all notated and marked up from sessions that I can then access whilst in post production. Previously this was huge amounts of paper and weight when travelling.

The stability of the app is great, and even better is the Cloud syncing across iphones and macs. I also use ForScore when mixing live shows, and here its standout as I can put an iPad in a holder on top of the console, and then make it be the master of other copies of ForScore open on machines around me, so when I turn pages or open other scores the slave machines follow along. Perfect for assistants and also good piece of mind for when there is an issue one day.

Very useful thread.
I have my notes on a (long) word document, just a table with name, key, chord changes, structure etc.
Like "oh crap, what's the chords for the next part?"
Gotta love prog space funk.

Anyway, what I'd really like is a "scroll down" feature, because some songs are more than one page and I'd like to see two half-pages at the same time.

I borrowed a page turner from a friend but it wouldn't give me that scroll option, it just jumped to the next page.

Is there a solution for that? I like Word because I can edit it during practice and it's on my Dropbox so it syncs on all my devices.

I use the tablet on reading gigs. I’ve got two stomps, an irig, and a Bluetooth page turner I made myself before all these options were available.
My favorite is the stomp. Especially love the USB port in the back. Can charge my device or sennheiser wireless XD thingy between sets with it. Just make sure you give it enough amperage or it’ll go into standby and leaving you wondering what happened in the middle of a song (when using it as a charger).

If you wanna build your own get an Adafruit Bluetooth Feather (or whatever version they’re up to), a couple of momentary stomp switches, and an enclosure. I built mine for around $49… but it’s much easier to just buy a Stomp.

My eldest daughter has (had?) a real knack for being able to remember lyrics and chord progressions which she definitely did not get from me.

She was about 13 and her sister was 11 and we were on our way to an open mic a couple of hours away (we lived in a pretty small ski town in NSW) and on the way the song Riptide, by Vance Joy, came on the radio. She grabbed a ukulele from the back of the car, pulled the sheet up on her phone and in 5 minutes was playing and singing it. The two of them performed it, without any sheets on stage, an hour or two later.
Another time at a gig a year later in a local pub someone asked for Big Yellow Taxi. During the break she learned it and again performed it without any sheets on stage. Some people just have a knack for some things.
It's a pity neither of them play much these days.

The other thing to consider is if youre using an effects pedal like a QC, Stomp etc that they can send and receive MIDI to and from ForScore. I have seen bands program ForScore to send a particular PC message to their effects pedals to recall a certain patch for the chosen song.

I can’t use that, they look like clown shoes and I would laugh hysterically every time I tried to step on them.

The Coda Stomp will let you select scroll direction, I am not sure how far a single press will scroll if you are on continuous pages though. It might depend on your screen size settings and if your app is separating pages or reading them as one long continuous page.

Most of the better quality models seem to have the ability to set the pedal options to act as arrow up/down, arrow right/left, page up/down, and space bar/enter key.
