Paging MIJ/CIJ Fender experts!

I'm in the market for a used MIJ/CIJ Fender Jazz and came across this unusual specimen in the sea of generic finishes and I really love the vibe but am curious if this is a legit and rare finish, or a refinish job. It looks like the neck was sanded so there's no s/n to use to check for the year, and I doubt I could ask the seller anything as they seem to be one of the "run to the store" Japan eBay sellers given the total lack of item description.

Additional question: has anybody removed the finish on any of these 90s MIJ guys, and how does it look underneath? Ultimately I want to go for a refinish not too dissimilar to this (but more opaque, closer to "mocha") and wonder if the wood is acceptable looking enough to get away with it.

There isn’t much legit to this one even if it’s exactly as advertised.
To buy a serial number free bass is a leap of faith that you just want a good guitar and don’t care what it claims to be. Resale will be tough unless you find someone that doesn’t care either.
As far as wood goes, each bass is different. You’ll find nicer woods, often one piece under opaque finishes. And less desirable ones, 3 piece usually, under solid coats.
Usually that is but not always.
