Painting a Cab?

Hi.

Your budget?

On the cheaper end there's "special" cabinet paints that are applied with a roller, mostly concrete floor paints (acrylics) if You ask me ;). ~10€/l

Then on the top end there's various wear resistant paints under the category of bedliners and that would be my choice. Relatively expensive (~50€/l), but tough as nails.

Forget rattle cans.
Nothing but loss of money, disappointment and grief in that direction.

Regards
Sam

Look at Home Depot for Rustoleum 'Hammered on' finish. Cheap and effective. This is a brush on application. It looks OK in black. Being that I'm allergic to gear that I have to keep clean, I haven't messed with white.

White Tolex ? Have you ever lived with a large Tolexed cab ? A guy would have to be nutz... or have a road case, crew and a truck to move them in ...

By all reports the DuraTex stuff is top notch and it is available in white IIRC. Some of hte other truck bed liner materials available outgas a cyanide derivative as they cure. Itf the truck is out in your driveway it isn't a big deal (apparently). I don't think you really want this occuring in your house though ... If you go with another coating material you want a copy if the msds and examine it carefully...

A commercial cab builder I know has his stuff coated for him by a place htat applies the bed liner material. I forget which franchise it is but that stuff outgasses water vapor rather than cyanide... IIRC $75 to $100 per cab ... That might be your best bet if you are only doing 1 cab anyway ... just double check on the outgassing thing when you select the vendor ...

If you decide to retolex it, it can be a lengthy project, especially on a large cab.

OTOH, I would imagine white paint covering would need many coats to look good though, could also get very messy. I retolexed my SWR 2x10 in baby blue in the small living room of my 1bdrm apt. I also replaced the grill in black mesh. I'm very happy with the outcome.

I spent around $100 for all the materials, adhesives, tools, and tolex. *Note: It was also VERY messy and tough to sand off the dead rat-fur carpeting on the outside of the cabinet. Defintely the hardest part of the whole project was removing the fuzz. If you have tolex on there already instead of carpet, it should be much easier to remove - at least IME...

Took me about 2 weeks to finish the project (taking my time).

There's a lot of help on here about step by step how to do this. It was my first time, and I'm very happy with how it looks.

If its an older Peavey, its probably made from MDF, the heaviest substance known! Instead of going to the trouble of removing the tolex, or painting over it (since its probably damaged anyway) I'd be tempted to rebuild the cab entirely out of light-weight ply, then duratex that. You might almost cut the weight in half. Just a thought, but I know its probably more trouble than you want.

Nice job :bassist:

Yeah that SWR is nice.

I wouldn't "rebuild it" if it's an old peavey cab, you probably got it for dirt cheap. Either retolex it (you can buy tolex from Steamco (Link Removed) since you're in Canada. If you find that you aren't really willing to pay to retolex the beast, then trust me, go with regular rattle can black spraypaint and just cover the entire thing including the grill. Here's a sloppy "point and spray" job I did on a 2x15 I recently got for $50. Cost me a couple bucks for a can of spraypaint.....

I wish I had a picture of the sides/back of it now but I couldn't find any. You can only see rips/tears right up close. From 10 feet away you'd never notice.
