Painting your grill cloth

Well I was going to have a friend paint a mural of some sort on there grill she is a hell of an artist. But was not sure how that would effect the overall sound if any

Use dyes. Paint is just going to fall off. Although, its black. Could be tough. Nm. Just go for it, and re spray it every week or so.

Black plastic screen door material? Never needs painting, just as durable as most open-weave grill cloth.

Semi-related question - how would one go about tie-dying a grill cloth? Thoughts?

I just bought an 810 from someone who had a cloth stapled over the grill cloth that had a similar design on it. Not sure how it affected his tone at all, but it was thick enough to. It wrapped around the back completely and was stapled to itself on the back end too.

depends on the grill cloth.
I say keep the original, but try a couple different types of fabric.
I used to do this in the 90's, and would use a very loose weave cotton with fabric paint from the craft store.
stretch the fabric over the grill first, then paint it.

Spray paint, fabric paint, whatever you want! it's your cab!
I doubt you will notice much difference in sound as long as you keep in mind that sound has to travel through it.
If anything it will probably sound better !

Or just take an old tie dye shirt and use that.

I spray painted a stencil on one of my cabs a while ago, just regular rustoleum. I never noticed any tonal difference, but I also do cover the whole thing. Just don't fill the gaps all the way and leave negative apace in the art piece.

I have painted them before. By "painting" I mean replace with metal because it looks orders of magnitude better and is more durable and easier to keep clean.

We'd get the murals and backdrops painted on sheets. Plain bed sheets. Then we'd stretch them over the cabinets with no noticeable sound degradation. Sorry I have no pics. We did some cool backdrops, out in space stuff for a whole season.

Most grill cloths are plastic, so forget about dye in most cases. If you are dead set to do this, check that it is indeed plastic and use a paint formulated for plastic. Use several light passes (as opposed to laying it on thick). You should be OK.

Used the front and back of an old cotton tie dye t shirt and just stretched it over the existing metal grill. No noticeable sound change in the Eden 1x10s.
