Double Bass Palatino Megathread part I

What kind of amps are you guys using with your Palatinos? I am looking to buy a new amp and wonder how much power and what speaker diameter I really need to get a less "guitar" sound? It will only be for practicing and I don't want to rattle the windows. Any suggestions?

Well, I am no expert but for me, the D'Addario hybrid lights are the ticket. I think that they are very smooth and silky. In my opinion they are easy to play and sound very nice on my Palatino....

I have a GK Micro Bass amp with the additional speaker cabinet that matches it. It won't blow out windows but it's way more than a practice amp. Tremendous tone quality !

i was wondering if someone could post some measurements of this thing: bridge width/height, nut width , width at the end of the fingerboard, distance between tuners( I have a set of quarter size tuners that might fit). also if anyone has decent pics beyond the ebay pics I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Its going and there had been a lot of great info so far. I have a question? My choice was Hybrid heavy why? I use heavy strings on my acoustic basses. I have tried lighter strings but found the heavy gave me more control over what came out of the bass. For those of you who use the light, would you explain why?
In an earlier thread I made 3 bridges and have settled on one just like the Palitino bridge. The only change from the Palatino bridge was to space the strings out from .875 to 1.02 like my other basses. The new bridge made a Hum? 20% difference in sound. The big thing for me is the spacing is just like my others. The other thing that won't effect most of you was the new setup made my Pignose Hog 20W (14 lbs only carry extra weight when I have to) sound vastly better.
I am though thinking about a little better preamp with more control and would like a recomendation on what has been tried and was successful.

I was wondering about your bridge experiments- On the one you ended up with, did you increase the width of the crown of the bridge for a little meatier contact point at the string and the bridge?
I was also wondering after you thought of adding a third foot to the bridge -if just increasing the lateral width of the feet (or even just making the foot one piece,extending over the entire length of the pup) would increase/effect the sound/tone?

I,too, have been thinking about a preamp. I would really like to retain & ENHANCE the quality of the instrument. Are you thinking out board or on board?

I don't think bridges from the reading I have been doing, that a foot all the way across would help. If you places it all the way the natural tension would put more pressure in the middle and leave the ends looser. I did in face make the bridge wider at the top to leave some room on the ends. 3 feet doesn't work any better than 2. I think the external preamp helped the most. It works best for me because have other basses.It really makes a great improvement. and it was only 72 bucks...! I set it up like this: turn down volume on the bass. Turn up the volume on the amp and preform all other control on the preamp. I like the external preamp because I can clip it to my belt and do fine tuning while I am playing.

Hi gfred,

I am using a K&K preamp called The Power pack. I got it from Bob Gollihur 72 bucks! Gollihurmusic.com. He is a great person to work with and will not stear you to the most expensive, but the best for your style. I really can't say enough good things about him. I am getting ready to check with him and discribe to him the expantion of my musical depth and see if there is a better preamp for me. I never would have believed that I would be playing Brick House and Redgae music on the bass since I never played anything like that in my life.

I ordered myself one of these Friday night, hopefully It'll come this week. I'm an EB player, but have some backround on URB. I was in the town Orchestra, and played URB in some jazz combos.

Sure I will once I get mine prefected and on a limited bassis.
I once fixed instruments for area stores and really got tired of it. So I want to do only a few. I would probable want 55 to 65 for one. I will let you know when I'm ready to make them. In the mean time you can file the one you have wider to get by until I build some new ones.

One of the things that really bugged me when I was in the process of purchasing a Palatino EUB, was the lack of visual/photographic detail about the bass. Plenty of information on the materials written down, but nothing really good to look at. Just tiny, bad quality jpgs and gifs. So it was hard to judge the scale or true look of the instrument before buying. I use Flickr, an online photo gallery community, and I've uploaded some shots of my bass in the hope that someone who might be considering buying one, will find them, and then get a better idea of what the bass really looks like. All pictures are 800 x 600 pixels in size. I don't know if all Palatino's have the same finish etc, but a photographic/visual resource of (any/all) EUB basses, is often a far better one than sometimes a descriptive one. Perhaps someone/anyone could set one up as I have and show and describe the modifications etc that have been made. I plan to add to mine as and when I make the necessary modifications.
