One Tuner Stuffed!!!
Hi guys-LONG time No chat re Palatino- this to say-1. Palatino working great. Yvarg's bridge working great..... Used bi/weekly for the last few yrs-all good.

NOW I got a prob. & wondering If anyone's had similar or can help a very NON-Handyman fix this. My Low E string tuner has broken.... It still turns but it actually doesn't turn the winder-hence I cannot tune the E string :-(
IS this a matter of simply taking off the string-unscrewing the tuner & replacing with a good one??? ANY hint's on this matter would be appreciated.
As It IS I CAN still play-w/ E string at present tuned between Eb & D- :-) so I WAS hoping it's a pretty EZ fix.

Any ideas?????

Some time ago I posted a poor picture of my black bass badged as Easton & Franklin. I must admit I like it in black.
I now have a good one.

Could be the string post has come adrift from the gear, usually just a small screw holding them together. You could try tightening it, or it may be sheared and need a replacement screw. Happened to me on my BG.

Well, i've just bought a Palatino the other day for £200. I've done some mods, am currently experimenting with rubber, and am designing a pre-amp to swap from the stock one, as mine is very hissy. It's my first venture into upright, and i'm currently enjoying it a lot. The new blisters are not welcome, though!

Hello fellow bass people. This is my first post here.
I've been reading up on the different EUB's and I think for the price factor I'm going to buy a Palatino.
I live in Alaska and the only EUB I can put my hands on up here is a Zeta (to pricy for me)
So I'm going to have to order a Paly from somebody through the mail.
Does anybody have any recommendations for who to buy this thing through there are a lot of companies selling these.

Just as a side note I do own a real upright it's Czech Wentzel Koholer 20+ years old sounds nice.
I know a Palantino isn't the same, but the URB is such a hassle to move around and fit on a small stage (which I usually have to plug in anyway to here myself over the rest of the band) and I usually end up playing my franken fretless P bass instead.
I love the scale of the upright as well as the sustain. Thats why I'm hoping the EUB will be a good compromise. I'll still take the acoustic to the bluegrass festivals when possible or the BBQ Jams, nothing beat not having to plug in.

OK, I just ordered mine, probably come some time next week.
While I was buying stuff online I also bought a Bassmax pick up (no preamp I'll see how it goes) and a set of Corelli 370 strings.
When I get it I'm going to do the rubber under the pick up thing, new strings, and the tail piece foam right out of the box.
I'm going to leave bridge as is (for now).

I went for the bassmax pick-up because I figured I could swap the pickup between my EUB and my AUB easily depending on which one I was taking to the gig.
Presently I've got a Schaller mag PU on my upright.
I don't like the schaller all that much. It rattles, and hums. Even after the mods I made on it.
But you can turn it up real loud without feedback.

I'm thinking of getting one of those Krivo mag pu for the Paly, maybe do a combo of Krivo and Bass Max.

I'll keep you guys informed.

I have been enjoying my black VE500. But there is a problem with the adjustable post/peg, when I tighten the two knobs when it is extended, the peg slowly slips from the weight of the body. In other words, any advice on how to positively tighten the two knobs so the bass's peg does not slip?

Same problem here. I have bought a pin from an acoustic bass which has positive detents. I plan to fabricate a fitting to fit it into the body like the acoustic. And take off the post.
Should help the balance.
I will report back if it works.

Just to keep anyone posted who cares
I received my palatino through musicians friend today. I opened up the box and I found 2 cracks in the finger board near the bridge. I called up musicians friend right away they sent me a return stamp via email to send it back to them they say as soon as I have a tracking number with an in-transit status they will ship another out.
I'm going to keep my fingers crossed and hope the next one comes in better shape. As a side note the pickup in the palatino came already with rubber inner tube material rapped around the whole pickup. They must be reading these posts.

Yes, if you come up with any ideas on the slipping peg, please let me know. I found that for improving the tone the best thing I did was align the wooden bridge feet so they are facing the same way, I had had it so each foot was facing the opposite way! Take a look at the feet and turn them so they look like they match, once you look this may may sense. Also, I put a thin piece of rubberized type shelf paper, the kind that is 'sticky' on one side and bumpy on the other under the pickup. Sounds pretty good. The tire idea also sounded muddy to me. Thanks to all for these ideas, they are easy to do and do make it a better instrumetn.

i bought myself an old KAY C1 urb two months ago, and was annoyed with the old solid tail hanger that came on the KAY.
after a research here in TB and other sources, i saw that many lutihers use stranded steel cable for the tail wire.
i did it also, using nylon coated stranded cable and a strong clamp to lock it.
and its make a big change and big tone improvement at every aspect. on pliability, attack, sustain, tuning stability and overall tone.
i also bought the book - "Setup And Repair of the Double Bass for Optimum Sound" and the author recommends also on the stranded cable.
after this success, i decided to do the same mode on the Palatino and today i checked it.
its less noticeable than the Kay, maybe because the piezo amplification and no acoustic sound production, and maybe because i installed the black nylon strings. but there is a change, just more slightly.
for your consideration.
here are some pics:

i would like to recommend on this mod to the new Palatino owners, because i think that so far, this is the best mod i did to the Palatino EUB. now its sounds so full and deep. much better than the metal tail piece.

here is an update.
I sent my Palitino back to Musicians shipped it the very same (9-22-08) day I got it because of the damage to the finger board.
Called them back the next day( 9-23-08) 4am Alaska time talked to rep gave them the tracking order which had an UPS in-transit status of my return. I was informed the replacement was to be picked that day and shipped that day. I went to the web site later at night to check the status of my Palatino return. The phone order tracking said the item was shipped, but I had no ups tracking number. called the next day (9-24-08) spoke to rep I was told the item should be delivered by Friday, I was also told the UPS tracking code should be available the next day. I called up today to find out the status of my Palatino 9-25-08. This time the rep told my replacement was back ordered that it had not been picked and wasn't sure when it would be picked or delivered. After speaking to the rep for 10min the only answers I could get were vague. Things like we might...... It could..... It's possible that...
After speaking with that rep I hung up and called back right away spoke to someone else someone in accounting I was reassured everything would be fixed and set right.
That is how it goes for now.

I am reserving judgement for now. I wait a couple of days and then make my judgment on Musicians Friends service. At this moment in time I'm not happy, I hope things work out.

AK- hope it all works out 4 U. I'm sure it will. I've had my Palatino for nearly 2 & 1/2 yrs. Have the rubber under pup mod & also the replaced string retainer-with a nylon -"Brushcutter cord" Strongest I could find!!! :-) It's been on for a year & still fine! Yes it IS the biggest tone 'better-ing' mod around for the $$$,. I use my EUB weekly for a regular Jazz/blues gig & for functions-weddings, corporate gigs etc... Does me real well.
The tuning peg-E string one-See above- I was sent a replacement one from the Bass Shoppe in Sydney! All's well with that now. I use with a Mark Bass LMII amp & Aguilar GS112 & sometimes a GS115 also. I often use a Fishman Platinum+PRO preamp also, tho I haven't taken my stock pre amp out-YET.....

rodl-
I'm sitting on a set of Corelli strings, a new Bass Max PU.
On Monday I'll probably get my Platinum Pro EQ/DI, and an Eminence Bridge. ( the short time I had my Paly I decided to change the bridge. It's pretty poorly made. Especially if I'm going to use the Bass Max PU. The pick up is mounted in the bridge, and I'd assume a lot of the sound comes from the bridge.)
I guess if it takes weeks to get my Paly it's not too bad. I can use everything I have now, but the EUB bridge on my upright.
It's gonna be a big upgrade from just using my Schaller .
I can also use the Fishman on my EB Fretless. Maybe it willgive my flabby stock jazz pick ups a goose.
I don't know if I'm ready to try the steel rope tail piece yet.
When I finally get the Paly for good I want to be able to return it in stock shape if I need to. Just to keep it under warranty, for as long as it lasts. I year factory I think.
