Double Bass Palatino Megathread part I

No problem, I've been meaning to put these up for a while but been a bit busy recently.

This is the bass after I glued the neck back together, it's actually playing a lot sweeter now !
I did a bit of sanding (very patiently) on the neck to get rid of some of the high spots and this has got most of the rattles on certain notes.

The new strings I put on (Inspirations) have really mellowed nicely after a few weeks on, really pleased with them.

It looks a bit clumsy in the fotos but it is very nice to play.

BTW I've left the end pin on but raised it up as high as it will go, locked it into position and it sits nicely against a rubber pad on the stand which allows it to sit at a more upright angle.

I'd be interested in seeing some fotos of your case, been thinking of building one myself but would consider buying one if the price was right, how much did you pay for it ?

The flight case for our Palatino cost us just a tad over £320 (GBP) from http://www.dragoncases.co.uk/
Also has a couple of wheels at one end so you can move it about solo. The wheels were retrofitted by the supplier after the pictures, they were on the drawing & included in the price. (They forgot to fit them originally, but corrected their error in a rapid 48hr turnaround)

We are customising the internal foam ourselves, they threw in lots of offcuts, but it's a quality build & money well spent to protect the 'Palie' from all the other kit in the Estate car en route to practices & gigs. And its somewhere safe to park it when you take a break.

Overall very happy with it.

This looks like it just might work. I'll have another visit to the DB shop and check out the adjustability of the arms of the stands.

I'm waiting on delivery of my Fishman Platinum Pro Bass control box doohickey - Mrs Pork Pie Hat is away gallivanting at the weekend, so if it comes in time, I'll be knocking myself out dialling in bass tones to the Pal :D.

With my other modest mods to date, I hope this will make a big difference.

Pagan, do you play in Edinburgh, I must try to check you out and see a Pal in a gig situation?

Thanks for putting up the photos, it looks really solid and well made, think it's just a wee bit expensive for me.

I was planning on building something similar and reckon I could do it for around £100 or perhaps a bit less, the problem is finding the time to do it :rolleyes:

Glad that they may be of some help to you making up your mind if the Stagg stand would work for you. It works well for me and it is much easier to play than on the endpin. Before I bought the stand I did the pipe insulation around the bit of side piping that comes with the bass and that helped a lot in steadying the bass for playing but the stand allows me to concentrate more on what I'm playing and less on holding the bass steady.

Anyway it's not too expensive, I think I paid around £20 - 30 for mine. The build quality is reasonable, it has got a bit loose through use but is still solid enough once in position.

Yeah, sometimes play through in Edinburgh, nothing lined up there at the moment but every now and again. I'm a bit of an old dude but I'm playing with my sons band Coffeeshop 36 who are all in their early 20s, great fun (most of the time).

I'll post up here next time we're playing Edinburgh.

How about yourself, you play up this way at all ?

Hi my name is John just joined the site so please bare with me. I have a palatino bass (picking up tomo) I play bass guitar in a 50s rock n roll band. So I have brought this bass as a substitute for a double bass for giging. Have been playing bass guitar for many years but have not really played double bass before. Would the palatino be suitable for playing rock-a-billy? and would I be able to obtain the clicking affect as heard on many of the sun recording? and also is there any tricks of the trade that I may beable to use to get this sound?any advise would be very much appreciated.

Here's a link to a re-seller, it's a Stagg SV-CE Cello / Upright bass stand. There's also a Stagg SV-DB which is for larger DBs and is non-adjustable, the SV-CE is the model with the adjustable arms which you need to make this work with the Palatino.

here are a couple of picks of my mods.
Basic summary.
Correlis strings
emminance bridge
stock pickup with felt between body and pickup
thin foam between bridge (g side)and pickup
K+K Bassmax pickup in bridge wing (e side)
Magnetic pickup
no stock electronics
All passive wiring only jacks, plugs and switches
and then I plug it into a PreAmp/EQ/DI box ( not needed if played in a good bass rig)

This thing sounds great now with 3 different sounding pickup and 6 different combination of using them.

And how do you like the new bridge? I'm seriously considering that as my final bit of modding on my Palatino. Thanks in advance!!!

The bridge is very nice but requires a lot of sanding to make it fit.
I had shorten the legs ( not the feet ) of the bridge a bit.
With the new bridge it has a lot less finger noise and nasal sounds,
and it's way more stout.

As far as pick up combination go:
stock and bmax/ db sound with some boom
stock and magnetic/ eub baby bass sound
magnetic only/ fretless bass guitar sound
mag and Bmax/ fretless BG sound with a some swell and boom
stock only/ db sound more focused with fundamentals less boom
all pick ups on/ really nice Hybrid fretlless BG meets upright

Forgive me for my noobness (kinda new to all this modding stuff)...

Your mods look pretty extensive and I'm seeing most of what you put into it (e.g. K+K Bassmax, magnetic pickup, etc.) but what exactly did you replace the volume/tone control with and did it require any extensive soldering/rewiring on your part?

And if you did replace the volume/tone control, is there any way to control it other than through your preamp?

Yes I did a bit of soldering.
I do use a fishman pre that has some tone control and volume controls on it.
give me some time to type this out and I'll explain how I wired it up

Step 1:I removed all the wiring inside the Palatino, srtipped it naked.
Step 2: I took the holes that used to be the tone control and volume control used a file to make them bigger so they would fit female 1/4" jacks.
Step 3: I made 2 more smaller holes to fit the 2 toggle switches.
Step 4: I put all the components into there holes
1/4" female
2 way switch
3 way switch
1/4" female
Step 5: I stole the female 3/16" female jack that was on the stock pos preamp and wired the hot to one side of the 3 way switch and then wired the bottom 1/4" jack near it to the other side of the switch.
step 6: I wired the top 1/4" jack to one side of the 2 way switch and left the other side alone
Step 7:I wired all the grounds together in on spot, and then I wired the output of my switches and 1 ground wire to the 1/4" jack on the other side were you pluge the cable into it that goes to your amp.
Step 8: Put everthing back together, replace the female 1/4" on Bassmax with male right angle, and make a short cable to jump from magnetic pickup to input side.

I like the input side I have because now I can easily change out all my outboard pickups to something different whenever I want without having to open up and rewire the thing.

Maybe I'll open up that jack panel and put a pic online if I can find my camera

and as far as a volume control goes the magnetic pick up has a volume pot on it will control the other active pick ups if I have it switched on.
I wasn't to worried about having volume controls since my DB doesn't have one on it, I don't travel to far from my amp or preamp

Wow, thanks a lot ak, that makes things a LOT clearer now. Seems like an extensive mod, but very flexible. As time goes on (and as I get more money) I intend on making some mods of my own. You gave me some good ideas other than the standard felt under the pickup + damp the tailpiece. Thanks!

Hey guys, new around here.
I just got a used Palatino and have it set up with the cymbal stand idea. But the threads are all messed up on the bass. The stand will still connect but it's not smooth going in. I took a closer look and can definitely see that things are not clean on the bass end.

Curious if anybody knows where I might look for a replacement for this? Does the company sell parts, or is there something I could pick up from Home Depot and slip in there, without the risk of messing this instrument up? (I am ok at these things... but not fantastic...)

Greetings all!

I'm just a lurker from across the hall in the electric bass forums, but am interested in maybe picking one of these EUBs up. As these instruments seem to be unavailable in my local area, how many of you purchased your Palatinos sight unseen, and not played? Is this a risk some of you took?:bassist:
