Fellow Palatinians :)

Please share your experience with Palatino body rest tube - did anybody find it useful/usable?

My experience: it doesn't stand too much in your way when playing sitting; but is not much of a help either.

Standing up - a different story: naturally, I wanted the instrument to lean against my body, but it's too slim, and gets too close. If I keep it a bit farther - my left hand becomes too busy doing this, instead of playing.

With the body rest - still cannot properly lean the instrument, it keeps spinning and falling, if I don't support it with left hand.

Any advice/ideas?

Hi,
I'm a guy from the electric forum.I don't visit here too much.
I'e been thinking about getting a cheap EUB or a while now.I'm a really good electric player in all styles and I can walk and solo through changes pretty well.
So making that transition to EUB is very scary to me.
Unforunately I only like the sound of the upright when it is played by someone like Brian Bromberg.I'm 53 years old and I may not have enough time left on this planet to get as good on the EUB as I am on the electric. And I will probably hate the way I sound for a long time.
But still, I might want to give it a shot.The good thing is I do like salsa and that I could probably do in a relatively short period of time.
The Palatino VE 500 looks good to me and it might be a good place to start.I don't want anything that looks like a stick with strings I don't care how it sounds.
I know there are mixed opinions about these Palatino basses and there is a lot of info about them but what I could not find (I did a search) was soundclips of good players putting them through their paces.
Can you guys help me find something like that?

I really searched a lot for Palatino Sound clips Youtube and Google.I watched all the ones I could find but there really is not much to listen to.I'm surprised.
Could it be a sign that good players just don't play these basses.I don't know.
I heard one guy play some kind of tex mex thing and Bass Bob has a bluegrass thing going at the end of a modification video.Not really anything that would make you go out and get one of these basses( no offence :))Then there's that ugly Alien Ant Farm video.It can't get much worse than that.
Another guy is playing something a little more jazzy.Night in Tunesia like in the beginning, then a little walking followed by a few solo lines.Here it is:



Some people commented that he must have been drunk when he bought the bass and had other unkind words for him.Not nice!
Actually his video was much more helpful than all the others in showing the basic sound of the instrument, except the recording quality was very poor and a more experienced player might have been able to get more out of the instrument I'm sure.But the guy gave it his best shot and it gave me the general idea.
I'm probably going to get one because it seems for the money I can't do better than that.
I did see an ad for an Aria EUB SWB 05 that looks a little like the Palatino but it is 3500.-
It will have to wait.
In the meantime, if anyone here has any "jazzy" recordings of the Palatino in action...
I'd love to hear a little bit more of that bass and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Maybe I was alone in my interest in an actual Jazz clip. All I could find here as far as sound samples is Bluegrass and Tex Mex.Really hard to tell if a bass is any good with that kind of music.
I did however make a connection with a Palatino player in NYC and he sent me a clip of his bass that really impressed me.
So Now that I know it can sound good I'll buy one.

I have a Palatino. Has anybody modified the terrible design of the so called 'bent piece of tube' that one is supposed to hold the Bass to one's body? Any suggestions?
What is the best EUB out there that has the better design for this perpose?--your experiences?

I own a Palatino. It is a fun bass. However, transitioning from my upright to the Pal is awkward. The side bar is the problem. I searched around TB and couldn't find any threads regarding side bar modifications, so I am putting this out there.

I spent some time trying to figure out a way to add more bar to the side attachment so when I shift the bass the bar won't slide. A definite down side in the Palatino's side bar design. Also, I wanted the bass to balance on my body, like the upright. I didn't want to have to adjust my technique. After hours of noodling around home depot I was stumped. Then I found an old "LP Claw". A percussion mounting clamp. Clamped it on and I was done.

It works great. The bass is stable. I didn't have to bust out the spot welder. I am relieved and looking forward to playing it on the gig tomorrow night. Check out the pic on the Palatino MOD forum.

I posted this in the original thread but dont mind repeating it here.

A mod that some used (including myself for a while) was fitting a piece of pipe insulation over the tube to provide a bit of cushion, it also made it easier to balance.

But what I finally settled on was a Stagg SV-CE Cello / DB stand which works perfectly for me & is not too expensive.

I have the support arms adjusted so that they are at approx. 45 degrees & the bass fits in very nicely. I removed the neck brace as it gets in the way. The endpin can either be left in or removed depending on taste, if left in it seems best to have it fully retracted.

The palatino is the only EUB I've really tried apart from the Stagg & I found that just as difficult to hold comfortably. I didn't like the feel or sound of the Stagg much but then it is kinda cheap & cheerful.
