Double Bass Palatino Megathread part II

Thought I might bump and share a pic. About 9 years ago I had a friend of mine do a sort-of antique violin finish on my Pally that turned out really nice. The finish is nitro, so it’s pretty delicate but I’m happy with the look.

I also have been experimenting with stand options...I used an NXT for several years and got used to having a setup wherein the bass was fixed in position and I could just walk up and play it, so I wanted something like that with the Pally. Pretty happy with the results so far.

I've been interested in refinishing mine for a while, is the black color around the edges stained deep into the wood. In you picture it's hard to tell if the black is still there after stripping.

Closer pic, dunno if this helps or not. TBH I’m not 100% sure how he applied the finish.

Thanks, it looks nice. I was thinking about a transparent amber kind of refinish, but I dont think it will turn out good with the black from the burst still in the wood.
Yeah I think you would need to sand it all down for that. My guy just did front and back and then roughed up the sides to sort of match. It was going to be more than I wanted to spend to sand down and refin the whole thing, doing front and back have me the look I wanted at a much lower cost. That might be an option for you, just depending on your motivation level.

There's some pickup clamped to the bridge... any ideas what it is?

I havent found info on this model yet, so im also curious about what wood and all that.
I got a soft case and bow included ...$500, i feel I did alright.

Not going to worry about the bass bar being under the G when i flip it..

Hello everyone. I'm interested in getting an EUB and I found a second-hand Palatino on eBay. The guy is asking $550 for it plus an additional $150 for him to drive 200 miles to meet me. So my question is this. Is $700 way too much for one of these? If so, i'm thinking I should probably hold out for a good bargain. If not then I might go ahead and jump on it.

Seems high, but I don't know what your local market is like.

Yeah, that’s getting into brand new pricing.

This is not a EUB, so wrong forum, but that said, that pickup is a Barcus-Berry B3150.
Should be mounted that way:

The smaller one is the cello model on a cello bridge.

I just bought an “Easton & Franklin” bass, it’s definitely look like the same as Palatino VE-500 or Harley Benton EUB-500...The former owner replaced the fingerboard to a real ebony one, it’s pretty ok. The pickup just stop to working, so I currently use it with my old Fisman BP-100 PU, sounds nice now, but the endpin really sucks, it can’t hold the height, so it’s sliding down, super annoying....Do have some idea to fix that? If there’s no other solution, maybe I ask the luthier to drill a “real“ endpin to the bottom....

I am new to my Palatino VE-500.
I am really loving the db sound and feel! I honestly can't put it down. I bought it used. Not sure what kind of strings are on it. Being the nerd I am been looking at replacements, ( any good suggestions and things I need to know or to be cautious of before I restring?). Tho I probably don't need to replace. I find bowing orgasmic. I been playing long tones every morning for a half hour. Trying to lean good technique. Coming from EB I find this challenging and refreshing. Learning fingerings and hand positions. I understand it's different from a big body bass but, I am trying to have correct posture. Having the bass lean into me and trying to use the weight of my advantage.
I have been geeking out on any db video I can find.
I wish I started playing this years ago. But, I'm glad I am now!

It’s high...Those EUB are not top quality, could happen, you have to spend more later. I have to install other pickup because died after a month...I have to replace the bridge to because broken (I don’t know how) when change strings etc....
But went for this bass, because most of the EUBs on the market, are overpriced (in my opinion) or not reminds me a real double bass enough...

I can see quite a bit of daylight under the treble-side bridge foot. Not sure about the bass side which looks like it has a shim. You might want to get that looked at or straighten it out yourself because the bridge is probably precariously tilted.
