Do NOT put Helicores on the Palatino. You need the lowest tension possible to give it a chance of living a few years(or months). If You must go w/steel strings find the lowest tension corelli. Check out lemure music for more info. Obligatos might be ok, but You can find a lower tension corelli which will bow & pizz fine & cost less than obligatos. You won't get as much sound, but with that good pickup just turn up the amp.

Keep the spiros for the next bass if You get one in the next year. Then put the old strings back on the palatino to sell it. Keep them even if Your next bass has nice strings. Having a spare set is good. You paid for them, so keep them.:)

Well, it happened. The extra tension from the Spirocores pulled the tailpiece cable through the holes in the tailpiece. The adjusters and all pulled through. I put some cable clamps on the ends against the adjusters and tuned it back up to pitch. We'll see what pulls apart next.

I have had Thomastik Infeld on my CCB for over two years. There are two small cracks forming around the base of the neck joint where it looks like filler was added to hide a lousy fit, and the filler has crackled away as it dried out. They haven't grown since I noticed them, but I injected thinned glued into the cracks last night. The neck isn't pulling foreward at all...yet.

I have an Engelhardt EM1 on hold at a music shop. Brand new and only $1049CDN. :)

I picked up a Palantino Travel Bass about a year ago on the recommendation of another player. So far, after heavy travel and practice/jam sessions, nothing has happened. I wish I would've found this forum a year ago (I found it only today!), as I probably would've opted for another bass.

My Pally shows no signs of bad craftsmanship, all the edges, joints, surfaces are neatly done. The tone is excellent and the action is far superior to all of the rentals I've gone through. Oh, and I am running real strings, not nylons.

My question is: what signs should I look for before the implosion occurs? Maybe there's something I can adjust/replace to prolong the life.

Hello - First time posting.

Somewhat off topic question regarding Palatino basses. I bought one a couple of years ago (Model # VB-009) from a respectable bass shop in LA (Stein on Vine) for about $1200. I've seen the same model on sale for around $700. Did I just get totally ripped off or did Stein on Vine do something to the bass to raise its value? It would surprise me if Stein on Vine ripped me off that badly because I imagine they would want to maintain their good name...though maybe they thought I was such a noob that it didn't matter.

I have heard from many that Palatinos suck but so far this bass has held up well without any problems. Of course, I am very much a newbie to the bass so I don't know what sounds amazing and what doesn't but my bass instructors seemed to think it was a good instrument (and one of them owned a $40K bass).

I got used one from Gary too, but they do a complete setup on the bass that you would normally pay someone to do. I got the bass, bag, good bow, rosin, and Ray Brown book (I already had Simandl.) I think its good for an inexpensive bass and even my teacher is surprised how good it sounds. Only thing I did is I didn't like the finish on the neck and sanded it down to a satin finish and feels real nice now.

Only thing embarrassing was I was in back check out the bass making lots of beginner noise. Gary comes back and says someone I want you to meet when your done. I finish up and walk back up front and Gary say this is Dennis Trembly principal bassist of the L.A. Phil'. I'm turning red thinking about the sawing I was doing with Dennis standing out front. Real nice guy and we talked for awhile swapping stories about bass players in town.

Thanks. That's a funny story. Gary is a nice guy but he seems to have a knack for making one feel like a fool ... or maybe it's just really easy to do with me.

2 Days after my post:

The back laminate piece cracked in the middle as I was warming up with some scales! It's like I jinxed it!

Now it's time to see if the store is going to honour its warranty.

Thanks to this group, I know where to look for my next bass. I've found a respectable albeit expensive shop and will be looking for a Shen, Christopher, Kay etc.

A friend of mine got in two of the "new and imoproved" Palatino basses for rental stock. One of them had a major delamination of the center of the top that extended into the bass-side F-hole. I emailed Palatino about it 3 weeks ago and got no response whatsoever.

FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS PLAY PALATINO OR CREMONA BASSES!!!

It's one thing when an uneducated buyer gets a Palatino/Cremona bass. But it is another when someone in here gets one. Wake up! None of us have any reason to stretch the truth around this stuff. We can generally get any brand of bass we want to, and resell it, so it not about personal gain. It is our personal favor to the buying public to take this strong stance. E Plurbis Unum
