Go read the book 48 Hours by William Forscheim (not sure if I spelled the last name correctly). He's the guy who wrote One Second After - which is actually a rather good read. I love SHTF/end of the world type stories for the most part. 48 Hours is a very badly written story about a Carrington level solar flare that follows an intense CME. Basically, the CME pops off first and travels towards earth at a relatively leisurely pace as they are want to do. The solar flare is hanging out on the sun, pulsing and getting ready to go - they label it 'Sauron's Eye'. Cute. So basically, if the timing is exactly terrible, the CME hits earth and peels back the magnetosphere. The flare then erupts and travels at light speed to earth and, given the lack of a magnetosphere to absorb the radiation, douses the entire planet (due to the length of the flare's eruption/earth's rotation/etc) in massive doses of lethal radiation - killing every living thing on the planet that hasn't finagled a way to get into a super deep shelter that is wells stocked with food rations, medical supplies, automatic weapons and the like. All in all, a horribly written book, but the entire premise is interesting. It has a ton of 'asking the really tough moral questions/save the children/elites are horrible/etc' content in it that makes it tough to stay with. I kind of gave away the ending though.

That's the thing with that book - the author tells you what's going to happen right away, then you read and read and read, and the thing they told you wayyyy back in the beginning? It happens.
