Past basses ya still think about

I've had so many basses over the years.
There's 3 I still think about,
I ordered a new MPC OUTLAW in 1978 , I don't remember exactly what I paid but I do remember
it was alot in 1978 dollars . It was stolen in 1984 by a drummer/coke head/fkn thief who I jammed with once in a while. I knew he did coke, I didn't know he was a theif . Until my MPC OUTLAW was gone . It's 30 yrs later and if I ever see him again I'm gonna F*** HIM UP .
#2 My KRAMER XL-8/ Orderd in 1980 was also stolen in 1987 from my house. It was the only thing in the entire house that was taken by whoever broke in . I hate THIEVES especially when I'm the person they choose to thieve from.
#3 My Tobias GROWLER 5 was all me , to this day I don't know what I was thinking at the time , I loved the bass , I sold it so I could buy an engagement ring for a girl, we eventually broke up , And she sold the ring , that I sold my Growler for.
STUPID STUPIDER STUPIDEST thing I think I ever did.

I sometimes think about the first bass I bought - a Peavey Fury. Have regretted selling it, over the years.

I still halfway regret selling my ExFactor. I loved that bass. But I sold it for a full semester of tuition and books. So my mom or my wife would tell you it was a good deal. Engineer schmengineer I wish I still had it.

Early 70's Fender Musicmaster in Daphne blue. I sold it to pay off some traffic fines, otherwise I would have lost my license, and subsequently lost my job. Last I knew another TBer owns it. I regretted selling it for a while, but I now own a '77 Musicmaster that fits me like a glove, so it's all good.

My 1st stab at a slab, mid 70's Tele bass. It was a pre-modded [Dimarzio HB & BA bridge] pawn store find. I had it painted black, added a pearloid pg, and a chrome pu cover my dad made.

Elrick e-volution built in 2005. I think about this bass nearly every time I play (or look at) my other Elrick. Many good memories with this one.

My original quad Jacksons and Charvels for sure. I've moved on from four stringers, but I still think of how sweet they were. Forgive the very shoddy photos. I didn't have a more standard way to photograph my gear then.



Honorable mention: This is a guitar, but its the one I would buy back if they went for the prices I paid still. Jackson Stealth Pro. There was zero wrong with it, just let a local shop I've since cut ties with burn me and I was unskilled at the time to do work myself, souring me on the entire thing. (I'd never let that kind of thing make me give up these days but then I was new to owning several instruments)

Not so much anymore. The second bass I ever owned--which I worked all summer as a 14-year-old to save up to buy--was an Ibanez Flying V, a pretty rare bass. When I was 18 it was stolen, which broke my heart. 30 years later I happened to stumble upon it while browsing the website of a music store. I bought it. But I quickly realized that what was a cool bass when I was a teenager playing heavy metal was not all that great of an instrument for a mature musician playing multiple genres. I could keep it around and hang it on the wall as a nostalgic memento, but I'm more practical-minded. So I got rid of it (at least, this time, on my own terms). I figure each of the (many) basses I've owned over the years was appropriate for its time and place, and the ones I own now are likewise appropriate for this time and place.

The two I still think about and wish I hadn't sold?

An el cheapo red SX short scale jazz. For the $170 I paid back in the day for it, it was a great value. Solid and stayed in tune. Originally bought it as a backup and once I had could afford better I let it go.

A white Squier Musicmaster bass. I got it cheap off CL but it had issues, high action, tuners needed work, just needed alot more work than I knew how to do. And when I couldn't find any reliable help I let that go too. This was before there were so many sites where I could have found the info I needed. Wish I had that one too.

My second bass I ever owned, a Godin A4 fretless. An amazing sounding instrument, but I sold it because I just never spent the time to work on my intonation, and was too busy gigging on my fretted basses.

And I guess a more recent purchase: a lovely 5-string Sadowsky J, from early 2000 that I got from Tully Kennedy. Sold it because I'm just not a big fan of the single coil sound, but I probably should've kept it.

You can’t find that one, but they are still being made. I’m a few months out on delivery of mine.

I haven't owned that many basses (8) in my 50+ years as a bassist, and never more than 2 at any one time. Most of those were jettisoned in the 70 as I was trying to find "my tone", which eventually turned out to be a Fender bass, so It wasn't like I just went with the flow. The answer to your query is no, I don't look fondly on former basses. Pretty much there was a good reason those basses were sold so there are zero regrets.

I should have probably hung on to that pre-EB Sabre I had for a while.
It was already outbound on a UPS truck when I heard a recording I made with it and realized: damn, that thing sounds pretty killer on tape! (That's happened to me more than once...)
It was one of the few times I've sold a bass at a profit. That money helped pay for a motorcycle which I had a ton of fun on, then sold to help pay for my current daily driver. So, in a way, I'm still enjoying it?

So many, but I’ll narrow it down to the Fender Roscoe Beck V and Conklin GTBD7. Both phenomenal instruments that I regrettably didn’t hold on to.
