Past & Present: Your dream bass at age 15 & your dream bass today...

At 15 my dream bass was a Kubicki Ex Factor. I went and got a job and worked my socks off and was able to buy one when I was 16, a white 1989 model serial #1777. I sold it when I was 18 and a couple of years later I got another one in a trade for a Warwick Thumb bolt on, serial #1659.

Now, as I approach 25 my tastes haven't changed a great deal. My dream bass is probably an ACG of some sort. Possibly the one I already own! Though I still want more!

This is my dream bass today.

When I was 15 I dreamed of a Ric, like my heroes Chris and Geddy played. Took me more than 20 years to get a point in life where I was both making enough money AND getting heavily back into music, but I got there.

The red Westone Spectrum in the photo is the bass I learned on and I've grown very fond of it. So while it wasn't my dream bass I've always loved it and don't ever want to part with it.

Think of the dream bass (Ric) as the hot movie star you can't attain, while the Westone turned out to be the girl next door who was right for you all along. Fortunately, I can have more than one now.

When I was 15, I wanted an Alembic just like Jason Newstead's or a Spector like Rex Brown's.

I was a strict stingray guy all through my 20s after falling in love with them at the Nashville NAMM in '95 (I couldn't afford one until '98).

Since '08, I've been all Fender. Most recently, these two have quelled all my gas for basses:

When I was in my mid-teens it was all about how pointy the bass was (late 80's to early 90's). I had a severe mistrust of Fenders and was only interested in playing like Slayer or Metallica. Embarrasing example from my youth:

In my 20's it was still about non-Fender alternatives, and Ibanezes were the rage:

Now in my mid-30s and my most prized basses are a Fender Jazz Classic 60's and a Gretsch G5123B (hollowbody). 180 degree difference!

At 15, I was all about JayDee (I was very much into Level 42) and Alembic (saw a photo of Stanley Clarke with one) basses. Went to live in London when I was 18 and played both of them. That cured me and I bought my first Guild B-301.

These days (30 years later), I'm perfectly content with my Fender Jazz Basses. There's a Wal and two Guilds in the mashup, but they're in storage and haven't been out in ages.

Hm... At 15, I had just learned that yes, I could learn to play bass and one day own a bass of my own. My main object of GAS was probably a jet black five-string Warwick Corvette $$.. I didn't know why I wanted another string, other than it just being "more strings"...

And well, guess what I found in a shop almost exactly a year later. I'm pretty new here and definitely on the low end of the age and experience range, but I sure hope I stick around and one day see this post as an old fart, still rocking a vintage 2005 'Vette that his mom got him as a graduation gift, heh

I started playing (annoying the household....)when I was 13 in 1971. By the time I was 15 Jack Bruce was my idol. What I wanted more than anything else was a Gibson EB3-L.....

Fast forward 40 yrs. and while browsing e-Bay I spot a used EB3-L copy. I figured after all this time, original EB3's are not getting any cheaper, and I already have my "working" basses (a Fender & 2 Ibanez BTB's...) so I made a pure impulse buy.

As good as it plays (for what it is....) I never pick it up. Just sits in the case. Go figure.....

At 15 it was a Ric...thru my 20's and 30's it was a Ric...today, it's still a Ric...been playin Ric's since I was 17..first one was a 4008 then a few years later 4001 then a few years after that a 4001FL...(don't have the 4008 or the 4001FL anymore sadly)...had affairs with others but always come back...today I play a'04 4003 and a'08 Am St. Jazz. Still have the '82 4001 though it doesn't see much playing time,it's semi retired..

Well, when I was 15 my dream bass would have been the same as it is now so I'll do the dream bass from when I was 12 (When I started playing)

When I was 12, I absolutely loved the Dean flying V bass. Now (I'm 16) my dream bass would be a custom bass. Jazz body, Neck mudbucker, P pickup in the sweet spot, hum canceling jazz pickup in the bridge, Badass bridge and a nice fat P bass neck. A lot can change in 4 years :P

starting playing at 14 one a short scale kay bass -lespaul looking. All i dreamed about was a SB precsion. at 15 worked to buy my that real bass - brand new for $172 plus 43 for the case. fast forward 39 years. I have well over 100 basses, many dream basses so i dream about the perfect amp instead - sound like my old V4B and Svt but fit in my back pocket

:bassist:

To be fair, I've always had a number of "dream" basses that I'd love to have (Wal Mk 1, Status Kingbass, MM Sterling, Ric 4004) but the 4003 in MID has always been my true dream bass!
