Patch cables, what solderless custom length kit do you use?

Time to tidy up the connections.

I see George L (and lots of raving fans), Planet Waves, Core X2, and Lava (which I'm ruling out because I need right angle ends on most) Any other manufacturers of these 'custom' kits? Which do you use, why did you buy it, and why do you feel it's great?

I'm wondering if I should buy one of these kits or just get the ends and cable from a parts supplier.

I use George L's, simply because that's what Diago stock, where I bought my pedalboard. I have never tried anything else, and don't think I ever will. In the few years I have had them they have been faultless. If you are going for a semi-permanent set-up, they would be ideal.

When setting up my board I looked at George L's, Planet Waves, Lava and Core X2, every one that you mentioned. I narrowed it down to the PWs and the GL's and then went to the local shop to see what he could get me. At that point, he said he could get neither. (And there is a point to this story, I promise.)

I looked a little closer for another week or so and was just getting ready to buy the George L's when the owner of the music shop called, all excited, to tell me that he'd found a distributor for the Planet Waves cable kit and that he had one in stock now. Even though I never told him to buy it (since he said he couldn't get it), I did feel obligated to go ahead and pick it up since this little podunk junction likely has no one else that will ever buy it.

Anyway, I've since bought six more of the Planet Waves kits. Do I like them? Yes. They are sturdy, easy to make and I put the first batch through one hell of a beating before I put them on the board. And I mean, a BEATING. I plugged in a couple of dummy boxes and kicked them around, pulled on them, tugged on them and the cables worked just fine afterwards.

I like the heavier cable of the PW kits too. The thing I would have prefered the George L's for is my loopers....The jacks are very close together on them and the PW plugs aren't as small as the George L's so you can't just run them out at a 90 degree angle.

But that's the only complaint I have.

I can't imagine you ruling out the Lava Plug because it's not right angle. The 'housing' is so small that the only real limitation is the flex of the cable.

I need right angle because three of the plugs are to be permanently mounted in the front of my open face rack and there isn't much clearance. I was sold on rusty's post of the PW, but maybe the right angle plugs aren't shallow enough?

Oh yeah. That's one thing I forgot to mention. The Planet Waves plugs will not pull out of the pedal with just a tug.

Perfect, thanks for the info! Need about an inch for clearance so these will work.

I use the Planet Waves kits and I'm pretty happy with them. I've never had a failure with them and they are very easy to work with. The one potential issue I can see for some people is the size of the plugs, (as Rustynuts indicated) but they are worth the extra space, IMO.

how tight can two side by side jacks be and use the pw stuff?

I used to use the Planet Waves plugs, but traded them out for George L's. I really liked the planet waves cables, but the plug size was making it hard to wire up my custom 2-loop VFB (it's got 8 top-mounted jacks). After I switched to the George L's I realized that I could stick my effects much closer together, and could cram more onto my board.
