Patch cables, what solderless custom length kit do you use?

I use the PW ones because my local shop was have a clear out and I picked up the kit for less than £20 :D

However, I have a small pedal board and the plugs although sturdy and the cabled don't pull out, are rather chunk. So the pedal I have that sit right next to each other I use stagged jack to jack connectors, and the PW cables for the rest.

how tight can two side by side jacks be and use the pw stuff?

An inch and a half if the plugs are right next to each other, or 3/4 inch if they are staggered apart. Here's a couple of pics with the staggered inputs:

Not the best pics, tired so I didn't have a steady hand, but here are 8 of the plugs stacked in a tight space.

George L's pretty much the only way to go if you have a lot of pedals to put in a small area.

They aren't perfect but anything rarely ever is.

I don't think you'd go wrong with the George L's. It was a toss up between the two for me.
