In what kind of situation would they be hard to use?

On a Pedaltrain board if you want the cables to point downward. Since the connectors are so huge, they stick down farther than the board so they hit the floor before the pedalboard does.

They are also hard to snake around say if you have a top mount jack next to a side mount jack.

In what kind of situation would they be hard to use?

For example the bottom row of a pedaltrain board if you wanted your jacks to go straight down which I did. Ymmv
