Hey all, ive just been looking into Paul Grey's basses. I know hes a Warwick user, but theres some clips of him and the band wearing red jumpuits which must be from the early years of Slipknot. I notice Grey is using a white Jackson lefty bass - anyone know the details and which albums he used it on? I know from an interview he used it at ozzfest 99'. Im wondering if its the bass he used in the early albums to create that clicky tone.

Uhhh... you want that clicky tone? You can get that with any bass by boosting the lows and highs, and scooping the mids, and doing that wickity wackety nu metal slapping.

Hmmm, lately I've seen him schilling for Ibanez, not Warwick. Never seen him with a Warwick at all actually.

Read an interview with Mr Gray a few years back, he mentioned that when they did the first Ozzfest tour the Jackson was the only bass he had, and was a bit screwed if anything went wrong as he was the only southpaw on the tour.
I believe it's on the Red Slipknot album, not that you can hear it much, and it sounds like it's on Mate Feed Kill Repeat (or whatever it's called), lots of slapping and tapping going on there.

I'm one of the resident Charvel/Jackson fanatics here, like the people who know their "Fenders" etc...one picture would tell me what it was, and tell all who are interested in what he used back then.
that is interesting that he claimed in his interview that he only had ONE bass for the tour? --jeezus what a dope. Even if I had to PAY for any basses I used on a band tour, I would certainly have a backup. ( or 2 or 3 )

He uses a lefty version of an ATK tuned B-D.
He has used a streamer and a thumb in the past, but the ATKs are the only things he uses now. MFKR was all Warwick, baby.

A lot of guys trying to actually live of their band income and tour professionally only have one bass that they play with ... they're not dopes, they're broke - big difference.
He used Warwick for a long time. IIRC, he got endorsed by Warwick after the "slipknot" album, and continued to use them for many years. He used Thumb Bolt on basses for the most part, but also used a Streamer Stage II at times (and this can be seen in the video for "Before I Forget").
After Warwick, he briefly used a Musicman Stingray IIRC, before moving onto Ibanez.
ok so I jumped the gun a little, but in all my years of "using band funds to pay my way" thing, I still have to question the dopey-ness about it.
SURE, my main bass is a $$$$ item, fine, used it for years without a failure and will always be my main bass but not to have another "cheap/whatever" backup bass around in my opinion would have been a risk I never wanted to take ESPECIALLY for a band touring for popularity/fame when they were just getting started.
back to the topic, if he DID play a Jackson even for a small portion of his carrear, show me a pic, and I'll tell you all what it was/is.
Yeah, the Slipknot guys are just regular guys around town and definately aren't living in mansions here in Des Moines.

No it wasn't. He didn't start using Warwicks until after the recording of the Red album, which was recorded with the Jackson, and he is on record as saying that was the only bass he owned. I figured he used the Jackson on MFKR, it does sound like one I used to own.
hey guys, i found only this video of him, heres the link. its only 14 seconds and a bit blurry but you can see his bass is white and pointy! so perhaps a charvel? but then again he specified a jacskon bass in an interview. Have a look at the vid, theres a couple points you can stop it and check the bass

ive recently heard paul on the MKFD alubm and ive gotta say hes one hell of a player, its a shame really hes had to just follow the guitars, although i loved his low end on the virus of life track.

In terms of learning to play, were there disadvantages to being a left-handed player?
No. I took some bass lessons when I was trying to learn the fundamentals of slap bass. I didnt get the percussiveness of it, so I sat down with a friend in Iowa. It was actually cool learning from him, because it was like looking in the mirror.
Its mostly the equipment part thats harder. If companies offer left-handed gear, they make it low-end, leaving the cheap, crap gear to left-handed playersexcept for Warwick. I went out on Ozzfest in 1999 with one Jackson bass. It was the only bass that Id ever owned up to that point, and I did the whole tour with it in a gig bag. If it had gone down, I would have been screwed, because I was the only left-handed bass player on that tour. I was looking at Warwicks; theyre constructed beautifully. I thought that theyd be the last company to endorse me but I called them and they gave me a shot. They sent me a Corvette; it played awesome, and I finally had a real bass. Ive been with them ever since.

if that truly IS a Charvel/Jackson, I still got one of those.
it is possible it was painted at one time and someone stripped it....or it was made for him that way....who knows...
