I freakin’ loved PeeWee. I was in grammar school when PeeWee’s playhouse came out, and I watched it every Saturday.
I haven’t seen the latest 2016 PeeWee movie, maybe I will soon.

Man, this is a tough one for both my wife and I. She was a kid when Pee Wee's Playhouse was airing and has very fond memories of the show, as well as the Big Adventure movie. As Pee Wee, he really gave a lift to oddballs everywhere, and he was a master at slipping adult jokes into material that could also be appropriate for children. And the characters he welcomed on his show and in the movie were a really diverse bunch. He had Grace Jones on singing Christmas songs!


He was in a hip hop video, with young Ice T appearing as a dancer!


And apparently he was a prince of a guy behind the scenes; I'm seeing tributes I did not expect.

Loved Pee-Wee as a kid and my kids love the movie and character too. We even watched the recent one which wasn't all that bad though he looked pretty old. Had some good laughs though. Sad day - RIP Mr. Reubens.

Calvert Deforest, aka Larry “Bud” Melman on Letterman in the NBC days, appeared as a member of the Playhouse Gang named “Rusty”. I don’t know why I remember this except he was hilarious on Letterman. Lol.

According to peewee.fandom.com, each episode of Playhouse required ten sixteen-hour days to shoot.

I loved the show because on the surface it seemed like harmless fun, but it was also a little subversive at the same time.

I actually got to see Pee Wee live at Caroline's in NYC in 1986! One for the books! Among other antics, he ran through the audience hitting people on the head with one of those plastic little kid noise making hammers! A rare opportunity to see one of the funniest acts ever.

I have a vinyl Terry Pterodactyl figure from the same period. The wings flap when you press the stomach! Wish it said "I don't wanna be the baby!"

Does anyone remember the giant underpants? After he initially exploded from appearances on Letterman, and before Playhouse, he did theater shows where he could get away with stuff that wasn’t allowable(at that time)on TV. I caught one such performance, it was insane.
PWP was also a stepping stone for so many then-unknowns in the cast and crew…Lawrence Fishburn, Phil Hartman, S. Epatha Merkerson, Jimmy Smits, Natasha Lyonne…and the set/props were designed by artist Gary Panter, whose stylized work can be seen on album covers from LA punk bands to Frank Zappa…

That makes more sense, and doesn't seem like a joke if you account for all that. The idea of actually filming 20 total minutes of on-screen footage over a period of 160 hours is what sounds crazy. I mean, how many times can you do the "mecka lecka hi mecka hiney ho" thing without breaking down and just going insane? "Nope that one wasn't good enough, let's do Take 47!" lol
