paul simonon! the cLash!!

props to pauls playing in the clash. he is definetly one of the most underrated players ever. his style basically made the clash who they are. he may not be doing any falshy solos or playing anything too complex but he has some great lines that sound really cool and plays very well. i was wondering if anyone knew how he got the bass sound in "the magnificent seven"? its one of the best basslines ever, and it sounds real muffed and poppy. any ideas? thanks alot. rock on...

I like the Clash for just being the Clash. None of them is really too stand-out to me, but I really dig their sound. Black Market Clash was my first Clash album - right when it came out. I still prefer it.

yes mates... i got the whole p-bass and pick deal. and i see he didnt play that bass on mag 7 anyways.... but its a great sound. any more info on how to get that muffed poppy bass? thanks for all the feedback. simonon represent.

also, i love the white pick ups, black pickguard, and white body pbass he rocks....so dope. can you paint pickups some how, probably not id imagine, where do u find white p-bass pups???

Yea they need to make it a stock fender color again, not just the reissues that cost $500 more...

Paul Simonon is in my top 5 favorite bassists. He just has that flow. I play both ska and punk, and he understood both styles extremely well. London Calling has such a great bassline. It paints an eerie picture in my head, gives the song it's apocolyptic feeling. Guns of Brixton is a very hip-hopish bassline, I love it.

As you could see, I could go on and on about this guy.

I like this quote in the wiki

"He was asked to join The Clash in 1976 by lead guitarist Mick Jones, who planned to teach Simonon guitar. However, the instrument proved too difficult for Simonon, so Jones decided to teach him bass instead"

Heh, that one's sure to get some people bent out of shape 'round these parts.

Thankfully, he did actually learn how to play bass, unlike Sid Vicious. Anyone who doubts that needs to go buy London Calling right now and listen to "Guns of Brixton".
