paying rent to rehearse at a band member's home

Is the band member's name Sketchy McSketcherson, and does he live in Sketch Vegas? That's seriously lame.

An aside, I once blacklisted a drummer (who was also a friend) who while gulping on a beer I gave him demanded pizza be provided at a rehearsal at my house to make it "worth his while". Just a random memory of who not to be...

Not only don't I charge my band mates for practicing in my basement, but I keep the fridge stocked with beer for them. I also regularly invest my own money in PA upgrades for the practice space. It beats the alternative...a 40 minute drive (hauling my rig) to practice in the singer's small, smokey, basement with a crappy PA.

OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!!

Absolutely NO!

I created a "band room" in the basement of our new home when we built it. My bandmates only had to bring their guitars (and only because they wanted to), since I had everything set up and ready to go ... all the time.

Unusual for sure, but to me everything is worth a discussion.
is it the sort of thing that if everyone kicks in a little (and reasonable) amount that will help him out and not kill everyone? is the rehearsal space a good one and everyone likes it? so maybe it is worth a little scratch from everyone each month? why not.

If it's not, it's not. if you don't trust the guy or particularly like the rehearsal space then it is definitely not worth it.

Having said that, I have always lived in cities and NEVER not paid for a rehearsal space. I've been lucky (believe it or not) to have never had to pay more than $125 per month and typically have been able to keep it under $100. (and by the way, that typically means 2 or 3 nights of rehearsal per week).

We currently practice at the singers, we've offered to pitch on electric and heat, but he says it doesn't make enough difference to matter, his only stipulation is that we provide the beer, which he'll drink once in a blue moon.
