Paypal Question

So i sold some stuff on ebay...The guy who purchased it did Buy It Now and payed via paypal. I have never had a gripe with paypal, but this ones a little odd, so I figured i would ask you guys.

He sent the payment Monday afternoon, say 3:00 PM. Here it is wednesday, and its still showing in my account as pending. I can not transfer it to my bank account, and it makes me rather nervous to ship this today when im not even 100% sure that the money is there. Is it normal for it to take this long? what transactions i have done in the past have all cleared much sooner than this.

I think it depends on how it was funded. If there was a balance in PP for the other party to send, I think that's instant. If it was electronic check, then PP has to get the money from the bank before sending to you.

You're not selling Guitar Hero stuff are you? My wife bought some on Sat and I paid Monday with e-check. But my bank shows it cleared this morning. Maybe yours will clear today as well.

In many cases, if your rating is under 100, it will not clear until it gets to the guy.

So, he pays, but paypal holds the funds until you ship AND enter a tracking AND it's delivered to the guy.

Happened to me.

Is that a new eBay rule or something? I've been an eBay member for 11 years, still haven't hit a 100, and I always get my payments immediately.

im not sure as to if he payed just with paypal or with an echeck. I guess its not unreasonable to tell him that it has not cleared yet and i dont feel comfortable sending it yet.

I do not own any guitar hero stuff, haha.

also...

I have only used paypal like 15 times tops, so no rating over 100.

Fairly new I think. I've been a memeber since 1999 and this happend about a year ago. My rating at the time was in the 80's. My paypal rating was in the high 70's and they restricted me to ship first. I have no negatives or anything like that.

But, when I got my ebay rating over 100, it went thru just fine.

here is a screenshot of what it says...

My ratings are at 100% and they still will sometimes hold funds until a) I can provide shipping details showing it arrived, b) The buyer leaves positive feedback, or c) some time period (I forget what it is).

It's a PITA, and what's even worse is that it their decision to hold funds seems completely arbitrary. For example I sold something for $100 recently and they are holding the funds, yet a $350 sale a month ago went through no problem.

Great way to make interest on your money!

Can't read that but recently Ebay/paypal set some new rules in regards to payments and stuff. I cannot quote it verbatim but yes there was a policy if you were new and sold something the funds are not released until the buyer says they have the item. Ebay did grandfather accounts but I'm not sure what the criteria was.... IIRC paypal should have already taken the $$$ from the buyers account here and is holding it for you.

One recent thing that I've had happen is now Ebay automatically starts sending payment reminders to a buyer and actually opens a case against them if payment isn't sent within say 48 hours. This happened to me during the holiday period where I bit on something and didn't pay quickly since I hadn't been online for a day or so. Needless to say I think that their doing this is pretty lame.

My rating allows me to not have to ship first to get paid but I also state in my listing that I will not ship until the payment clears which to me means it's sitting in my bank account.

To be fair, you really shouldn't be spending the money before they get their item. Holding the money does offer the buyer some protection, as in the past there have been sellers who shipped broken/wrong products but already spent the money, so when PayPal went to collect reimbursement for the buyer, there was no money in the seller's account for them to take.

AAH. now it wont let me ship it via the paypal website to print the ups tag because the money is pending. so now i have to use my debit card to do it. this is the last time i will be using paypal.

If the money is pending, why would you expect to be able to use it for shipping? :D
