pbass experiment question

One last question......I am left handed. When I installed the emgs in the schecter I had to use emgs right handed tone controls. I have gotten use to turning knobs in reverse of the way you guys do it so that doesn't bother me. Emgs setup was plug and play though so no soldering. If I put normal right handed pots in here and wire for right handed I should get the same backwards effect right?.......speaking about the directionality of knob movement of course.....kinda tired of looking at/for left handed pots and wiring diagrams. If its just a case if turning knobs one way or the other I don't care.

Yes.

But there is no such thing as "right handed" or "left handed" pots. They are logarithmic and reverse logarithmic tapers. If you want your pots wired backward from convention, choose either linear or reverse logarithmic tapers. Both are easy to find if you buy from the right place.
 
Forward or reverse...they are sold as normal or left handed. But for my purposes keeping the movement the same on both basses would be more comfortable. Been looking at a wiring and pot kit I could throw in when I shield it. Not too co cernwd with making true left handed controls....just wanted to make sure I'd have no tonal or operational issues........didn't assume I would:)
 
The tone controls wont be very independent.

nah, the tone pots will only be very slightly interactive. try it and you will see. Remember that a p pickup senses different pairs of strings. A side-by-side humbucker wired in series with two tones will still have almost completely independent controls, but because both coils sense the same strings, you won't be able to tell by ear, without tapping the coils with a screwdriver or something.

I recommend using 22nf caps instead of 47nF.

as for hum, well, the wire you run from the join of the two coils should be shielded. if your pickup only has two single wires from it, you should replace this anyway. you can just go with a 2-core and shield type wire if you like. Or if your wiring is already shielded, then simply earth the braid to the new wire at one end and trim and heatshrink it at the other.

Don't use linear for tone pots. If you must have "left-handed" pots, use anti-log pots (or "reverse-log", "reverse-audio" etc). These days these are usually called "c" pots, but not always. It depends on the manufacturer.

very few of my left-handed customers over the years, have prefered anti-clockwise pots TBH. They are used to turning up the car stereo, the oven temperature, the light dimmer, mixing desk knobs etc etc clockwise.

If you are leaving out your volume pot, you may want to run a kill switch push-pull for convenience.


I'm not really sure how useful this wiring will be, but hey, if it gets you to your ultimate tone, then I say go for it!

Oh, and yeah you could also wire the coils in parallel and sum them through a couple of 10k resistors to get independant tone controls, but I wouldn't recommend it. The output will be 6-7dB lower and the bass will sound a bit brighter than a p really should (IMHO).
 
Thanx for all the Info. I'm pretty content with right handed controls on the schecter so I think I'll use em here too. I went ahead and ordered a pots n wires kit. Just gotta wait for it to get here.
 
why not just use the pots that are already there? if it's wired as a standard p, then you'll have two 250k log pots already. these will be fine. 15nF caps will be fine as well. personally I would just go to the local electronics shop. with pots wired one per coil in series, you could also get away with 100k pots if they don't have 250k. two pots and two caps shouldn't cost you more than 5 bucks.
 
These pots are phuqqed as is the wiring. I'm not stressed about a few bucks here or there. If I'm gonna replace everything I want to make sure I end up with something better. There's a lot of "hype" about the Superpots capabilities but that could all just be hype for 15 bucks a pot. To attempt this idea I would have to separate these pickups and the chance of have an overly bright yet quiet instrument aren't worth screwing up some decent pickups. I think I'm just gonna keep it a normal pbass until I decide whether I want to get new pickups.....then I'll have a pair I can experiment with.

Seriously, go for it. It's a pretty interesting idea actually. I'm thinking about it for my own P. Although I'd probably go with a stacked pot for a pair of concentric tone controls. I like the idea of taking just a little more treble from the D/G than the E/A.

Adding a wire from the the join of the pickups is a piece of cake. I can't see how you'd "screw up" the pickup this way.

Please don't spend 30 bucks on a pair of "super pots". I've bought whole basses for less than that.
 
thought just came to me.......

if my problem and the reason for trying something like this was because i want to brighten the low strings without over brightening the high strings.....

could I simply solder a capacitor on a line coming out of the pickup that sits under the G and D strings?

forgive me if that question shows a morbid misunderstanding of the situation.
 
you'd need to put the cap "across" the coil. iow, you'd remove the d/g coil, and solder a leg to each of that bobbin's solder lugs. this is essentially the same as turning a tone pot all the way down on that coil. so obviously 47nf or even 22nf is far too high. you will have to experiment. I'd think you'll be in the region of a tenth of this value.
