PC Issue

I'm pretty PC savvy and can handle most issues but this one has me stumped. When my wife plugs in her headphones, it mutes the speakers on her laptop. Today, she plugs in her headphones and there is still sound coming out of the speakers! And I can't figure out how to fix it! OS is Windows 7.

check sound settings, and make sure that all sound options are enabled properly.


since i don't use windows anymore, i don't recall the exact path, but you need to get to the control panel.

jiggle the headphone plug while it's in the jack. seriously.

happens to my windoze lappy all the time. if not, yes, get to the device manager in the control panel.

this is what was going through my head all along... i took a bite from the apple and i've never looked back for laptops. for desktops i'll always be a windows guy... but seriously. i love my mbooks reliability.

Make sure she plugged them into the phones jack and not the mic jack. On my laptop they're right next to each other and I plugged the headphones in the wrong jack and couldn't figure out what was going wrong for a few minutes.

You're right, that's pretty sorry advice; spend $1500 + for a problem that could probably be fixed for nothing.
Besides that, he may want to play games, or work with Photoshop. He says he is "pretty PC savvy" so he may not need a computer that's idiot-proof-designed so that granny can get online.

To the OP, if you have a Soundblaster card, in the settings there is a check box which allows you to "mute when headphones are present".

I am pretty savvy when it comes to PC's and this has actually happened before and I fixed it but this time, for some reason, I can't find what I'm looking for. I don't think it's a Soundblaster soundcard. I'll figure it out.

I'd go all in on this if there was a WORD type processing app for the I-pad.

Try this:
go to the control panel, then "Hardware and Sound". Click "sound", select "communications" tab. Click "mute all other sounds".
