Peavey 410TX Worth It?

Hello All . I am new to the site. Do you guys think it's worth changing out the woofers and doing the whole bypassing of the cross over? I was thinking about tolexing the cab and putting eminence basslite's in this cab. Buddies of mine to include me the OK bass player are trying to put the band back together.

I have that cab and I love it stock, other than the fact that it weighs a ton. Is that why you're wanting to go with the basslites?

As much as I love it, I'd buy something newer, lighter and better before I'd spend that kind of money on it.

BTW, welcome to Talkbass!

What he said!
I had a pair that I used for 13 years...I really, really liked them. But while they were 20 pounds less (each) than the pair of 1810s that they replaced, at 98 pounds each they were still bloody heavy!
I'm sure the Basslites would knock a little of that off, it will still be a load.

And, welcome to Talkbass!

You will have an endless supply of contradicting opinions here on TB welcome. I love the TX series and re-placed with neo speakers in mine as they were to good to scrap. The 3/4 ply will not make it a light weight option ever but lighter at least. Probably selling my pro series cabs simply because the TX get all the gig time. That said the price of 4 replacement drivers could also get you a decent cab. Have someone here check the speakers you want first (modelled) to make sure they will work good in your TX.

Welcome to TalkBass!!!!

Call the guys at US Speaker. Give the the inside dimensions of the cab, along with the dimensions of any ports/vents. They will run the that through software that will allow them to recommend several options based on your tone/volume/budget goals.

Don't just buy four "upgrade" speakers and slap them in there. If the new drivers are not designed to work well with the physics of your cab, the results could be disastrous.

That being said, I agree with others here. If you're going to drop $400 on replacement drivers, you may as well just buy a modern used cab that already kills and is lighter than yours. You can often find Epifani UL series cabs for around that. And that's a tremendous upgrade.

Stock, those Peavey 410 cabs are great sounding cabs.... and terribly underrated. They are heavy beasts though.

Thank you guys for all the replies. I will have a few more questions that i hope doesn't annoy to many of you. Has anyone ever seen the movie or read Stephen King's Christine. Basically i think i am treating this cab like her. I saw her all beat up and see something that probably doesn't deserve a face. Hell i am gonna do it because i love her starting with tolexing her in red. I will run it by US Speaker. Eminence recommend's the Basslite S2010's and Beta-10a's.

I have basslites in my 210 tx it was a good improvement on the originals. But after trialling faital in other cabs they were better but have a matching price tag. Sure eminence will recommend there own speakers for your replacement but if you call on help here you will get an impartial view of what will work in that cab. I'm also restoring an old 410tx and am toying with what to put in it......I will definitely run it by the speaker guys here or elsewhere first they helped me a treat with previous cabs...

At least in my hunting you can generally find these older cabs for around $200 and something or less depending. I picked my TX410 up from GC used for $120 years ago. It's tone is decent and it's got some weight to it for a 4x10, however it's built well and I mean fall down the stairs and still works type of solid built.

Picked mine up for 40 quid.... It has been cleaned repainted and partially recovered and pull out casters added. Everything works. Occasionally a strange sound from one of the drivers so they will probably all get replaced eventually.......

Yep brother i paid a hundred bucks and all the speakers are in good shape. I think they swapped them being they are not sheffields in the cab. They are Peavey G2’s i think.

Does anyone absolutely hate the basslite s2010’s. My plan is to switch everything to 4ohm with speakon connectors added. I was looking into retrofitting it with a silk dome tweeter i just dont know how or what to do with the crossover or whatever it is called that the tweeter is plugged into or to just ditch the tweeter all together. I think if it helps the sound by changing the tweeter i want to that. I have read a lot of post here in regards to this old cab and some or most say unplug the tweeter. Many brag about playing without a tweeter for X amount of years.
