Can someone tell me the difference between the foundation and the US Millennium basses? How different do they sound, and which one do you prefer?

Most Foundations Have a Poplar body. The USA millenniums have an Alder body. The usa millenniums have active pickups or at least evey one I have seen. And the foundation mostly has passive pickups, except the foundation "s" which has an active P&J set.
The USA millenium 5 is a 35" scale. Foundations 5's are 34".
I like them both. The foundation is a lot more affordable though.

strange, according to the peavey.com site, all millenium 4's and 5's are 34 inch scale. active or passive.
the downloadable manuals don't give any specs at all.

That's for the imports. The USA models were discontinued a few years back. I have 3 USA models and they're all 35" scale, which rocks.
Nope. The Foundation S is a straight up passive P/J with VVT controls... didn't even have a preamp. Had a humbucking J pickup tho. I had one.
EDIT: There was a separate model of the S which was active (the S Active, ironically enough
), but those are incredibly rare, and it had soapbars.
Vic what'd you like better, the superferrite foundations or the S model? I'm thinking of picking one of these up as a backup to my dynabass.
True, but for one small exception - the USA Millennium Standards which Peavey never released to stores are 34" scale (I measured!). They are passive P/J's with alder bodies and rosewood boards. There are a few of us here that bought one when Peavey used Musician's Friend to blow them out - $279 with hard shell case that also fits my first Millennium (the black J/MM) perfectly.
Ive never played a foundation but I have a Millennium BXP import Jazz that I love. Has great sound and I love the neck. Inexpensive too at only $259 (after some swindling) Canadian with new strings and pro setup.
I haven't played any Foundations so I can't really comment on tone differences.
The USA Millenniums are somewhat harder to find and are more expensive; but I see them for sale in the $400-600 range depending on condition, 4 or 5 string, and whether it has a fancy figured top and/or drop-D tuner.
They are a great value at that price.

i had the USA Millennium 5 string for a wile ...it was cool sounding and easy to play but i found the B muddy and hard to keep in ton. i decided to up grade to a 6er and sold that 5er
I'm confused. I thought the "S" meant Superferrite? That part I'm not sure about, but I did think I read somewhere that the pickups in my passive P/J Foundation S were Superferrite humbuckers. That's the only Foundation I've owned. The 4 string S model. Black. I've owned a few USA Milleniums, and 4 Cirrus', including one very rare NAMM poster child (currently residing in a freind's studio).
It may be time to ask Steve Smith at Peavey...
Regardless, it was a player, kinda' beat, but man, it played and sounded great.
Just outa' curiosity, I may be selling a mint and very rare Gv, which is basically a USA Millenium 5 with OHSC, a Moses (or at least Moses style) composite neck, holoflek finish (looks like a starfield that constantly changes colors under lights), and the Cirrus preamp and pickups. Plays and sounds fantastic just like it should. Just had a brand new neck pickup put in as well. GAS for something else is setting in.

My friend chuck has a foundation "s" and it has a factory (active P&J set up) It's the only Foundation "s" I ever played so I assumed All the Foundation "s" were active. The one he has definatly is active.
I recently picked up 2 Foundation "2000" USA 5 strings. They are 34" but they have the same body as the millenium except it's made of poplar. I think they were only made for 2 years.

Man I sure would love to add a GV to my collection. I just don't have the funds right now.

I do know that it is pre 1993 because it has the split style neck. It also has a 3 knob set up. 2 volumes and 1 "stacked" bass and treble control, if I remember correctly, and I know for sure it has a pick gaurd.
I guess these could be after market but I dont think so.
I just went diggin' for my forsale pics of my old Foundation S... can't find them yet, but I swear, it was a black "Foundation S" said so on the headstock, and it was a totally passive P/J with a humbucking J, and the pickups had those adjustable pole pieces. No, they weren't replacement DiMarzios, they were original... kinda' funky lookin'... sorta' like those G&L pickups.
