Peavey Classic 400 - Mega Thread - Part II

cl400.jpg

NAD for me

Yes definitely a crew only amp. Comes out for the festival gigs . But otherwise gets used for practice weekly. Took a while getting used to the settings and the power. But with a HPF I even use it with a 210 without issues. I'm still loving it but avoid lifting it regularly ;). I bought a mini max for intended home use but the classic runs quieter(fan noise) so I'd did go though a front room phase when gettisg familiar with it...

Hey gents, just thought I'd stop in to my fav thread. I still love my CL400 to bits. I have tried it with an Eden d410t, Peavey Pro 410, and my sonic 410 and it sounds best through the sealed sonic 410. It's been solid since I did the big repair on it but maybe I'll re-bias the tubes just for fun sometime soon. Like a previous poster, the crunch chanel is a bit of a mystery to me. I can't seem to get a good tone as it goes from clean to distorted quickly. Oh well. It still thumps harder than any amp I've ever played.

what power tubes do these 400 peaveys have?

Had JJ KT88s in mine. For some reason it didn't seem all that loud to me, though the speakers in my SWR 8X8 were jumping like crazy. Could have been the cab, both it and the PV are long gone but it's cool to have owned one. Moved on to a different heavy, obscure tube amp.

Wow thats the first time ive heard not loud and classic 400 in the same sentence.... the speaker jumping I can second I've only really been able to use it properly since i reduced its power to 200w.... at full power it really leaves 810s begging for mercy quite quickly and I needed a HPF and allot of care with bass and resonance settings to tame it....so much bass it's a bit ridiculous sometimes but fun....;)+1 on the jj kt88's

Looks like the Classic 400 thread is well and truly dead :( . After years of not gigging the old Girl ( regularly use for practice) Tonight is the night with a 90s tribute night at a large venue ! Can’t wait to open her up ! There will be Thunder ……

how did it go? Did it register on the Richter scale?

Omg in should gig this more often ! We were playing with three bands and to see the faces of the other bassists light up ( including my own) was well worth the lifting and luckily the crew helped…. Thoroughly enjoyed it well mixed gig and fantastic on stage sound from the 400. Particularly useful one bassist was used to a vb4 so he loved the grit Channel! the other is a trace guy and he used the clean channel ….. I usually play an Eich T1000 nowadays and it’s extremely handy and sounds vgood but this thing is a totally different league IMO…. Just a pain in the ass to move . Luckily I use Neo cabs and these are lighter than the head crazy
