Thanks for the help! I looked up the Ken Smith Strings and there seem to be a bunch to chose from. Can you be more specific about which ones (I have seen Medium Light 7, 5's, just a bunch

I just got a T-20 a few months ago and that slanty superferrite is amazing!!
Totally, i know it seems like a rip-off, but the pro set up is WELL worth it. With a rad bass like that early Fury, i'm sure the tech will even take extra care of it just because it's so cool.
FWIW, my T20 is slung with DR Hi Beams and it's awesome!!

If your friend has been keeping the bass in playing condition, it may not actually need much work. OTOH, starting fresh strings and fresh set-up means starting good-as-new.
Any local instrument shop should have people who do that work.
This forum here has more people into flat-wound strings than you'll usually find. Literally none of my local stores stocks flats for bass. Flats have a lot less of higher harmonics (the edgy metallic sound) than round wounds. They can sound wonderful, but it's possible to turn down the tone on rounds to sound more like flats, but not possible to turn up what ain't there on flats. So rounds are more versatile.
I'd recommend nickel, rather than stainless steel, strings. Stainless kinda chew up your fingers, and at first it can cause discomfort.

Not sure which string it is, but the Ken Smith strings he is referring to are stainless steel and have a .095" E string. They really bring something special out of the super ferrites pickups. I equipped my Patriot, with a single super ferrites like yours , and now it just sings. MNairhead still wants it back, and those strings on that bass is why. LOL
As for setup, god knows there are no shortage of MA area bassist here so advice should be plentiful. But if not, check with MNairhead. Nobody knows Peavey like him, and I am sure he could help.
I just looked up that E string and I guess it is either the Ken Smith Super Lights or the Extra Lights.

Those strings are magic on my Peavey Patriot. I should figure our how to post some sound clips of that bass, through my line6 studio 110. With the B15, and SVT emulation I have every tone den Chris Squire, to Geddy Lee, to Pbass, and Jazz. Such a versatile bass, and strings.
I have a lot of other high dollar bases, and they all sound great. But for just shear fun, the Patriot wins hands down. And the Smith strings are a major part of that sound.
So I understand these Smith strings are round and steel. I am looking for a deep booming sound I guess when playing. Will thse strings give me that type of sound? One of my musician buddies told me to go with flat strings for that kind of sound on a P-bass? And what about nickel strings? They will be softer on my hands lol, how would those sound?
Define deep and boomy, that is a little vague. What kind of music, and what kind of sound are you looking for? Any band or style in particular? Flats have a place, depends on the music. That will also determine amp choice as well. Any band or player who's sound you would like to emulate to begin with?

T20 is a different beast and vibe... the dimensions are "meatier" than a sleeker patriot-ish bass
Not sure why the smith light steels worked so well on [DEL]Kevin's[/DEL] I mean my Patriot... .. the things almost felt like ashbory strings.
The more I read about strings the more I think I will ike the sound of flats. I am into that old thump from motown and things like that. So if I go flats, which ones are recommended?

Bass is only one small element of the equation. It's normally easier to have samples you want to emulate -- then work the combo backwards.. The hard and realistic reality is many recordings we hear are processed and direct.
I know this is cliche ridden - much of it is in the touch setup and equing. Heck.. I can't get my Jbass to sound like a Jbass or my Pbass to sound like a Pbass...
I'm still wondering what growl sounds like.
