Flats.. used something.. save the money, let someone else break them in.... PM me I may have a set of 30 second installs coming out.

I'm partial to GHS light tapewounds (you normally don't have to open up the nut) .. seems to me they have a wider spectrum sound.

So you are saying flat strings need to be broken in? And you're suggestion is to go with GHS light Tapewounds? Do you have a link to them because I just tried googling them and did'nt find them.

My personal preference are tapes as they sound slightly different... they feel eaiser to play and have hints of a different sonic foot print.

Flats really don't wear out.. you can save some bucks by buying used..

He is right about that. Love flats on a lot of basses, precision-type basses in particular. Get them from MNAirHead and save some $.

They feel very smooth to play and do not have as much "zing" sound to them. More thump for the buck.

Putting them on my Fury as soon as I (if I ever) get the refinish work done.

Well, early Motown was James Jamerson, and he used flats. In fact he only changed them when they broke, and then only that string as I recall. Could be wrong about the change interval, but I know they were on for years. I forget who has the Jamerson Signature strings, but you couldn't go wrong if that is the sound you are after. I would also advise an Ampeg B15 amp and cab for the authentic old Motown sound. Or you could Get an emulating amp like the line6 lowdown series combo. I use the studio 110, and it has a very good B15 and SVT emulation. Not the real deal, but close enough only an ampeg-ophile could tell the difference. You might also try nylon tape wound strings, they also have a very old school thump to them. They have a bit warmer tone to my ear, than flats.

I wouldn't swear off stainless round wounds just yet,as they are more versatile. You can get a big boomy thud sound, just by rolling the tone back. But you still have the round sound if needed for other material.

Good thing strings are cheaper than amps, it's a lot easier and less expensive to find your sound that way.

I know this is cliche ridden - much of it is in the touch setup and equing. Heck.. I can't get my Jbass to sound like a Jbass or my Pbass to sound like a Pbass...

Don't know what growl sounds like? Plug Humphry in, strike a note and listen. That is growl!!! You just don't want to admit it, but you love the growl. lol

No, it was YOUR bag of parts. Instead of taking the time to inspect it and assemble it, you decided it was trade fodder. Now it is MY "bass", and no you can't have it back. Unless you want to trade it for Humphry, then we might work something out. lol.

As for the OP, MNAirhead has plenty of broken in, swapped out strings from his collection of basses. He also is the resident Peavey go-to guy, and does setup, as well as online bass education. He will do flats install and setup and then teach you anything you want to know about playing it. Pretty safe bet, and a good friend. lol :D

Sorry to the troops if Kevin's and my banter was side tracking or confusing.

Long story short, I picked up a molested Patriot.. never touched it .. didn't make any representations... it was from the 2nd generation (sleeker with ferrite and the better hardware)

("Humphry" is a multithousand dollar botiquish graphite fretless.)

It ended up being one of the better playing 4s I've ever touched

But yes, highjacking the thread aside. I think GHS or Labella tapewounds would sound great, and you can ask Tim about my little line6. The bigger versions would sound a bit more authentic. But until you decide what you really want or like, and what works for you sound and equipment-wise, it might be best to have as versatile a piece of equipment as you can get. It isnt a perfect emulation, but it is really close, and loud! I believe they have a 300 watt, 1x15 version that should work well. I know my 1x10, 75 watt version will shake the place nicely.:bassist:

No point investing major cash in a vintage flip-top, till you know that is what you want. That's all I am saying.:smug:
