Peavey Fury Bass or Squier Affinity?

Hi everyone,

I have been playing bass since I was 14 years old but lost interested after moving away and now getting back into it.

I need to buy a new bass with a very tight budget. My option are a Squier Affinity PJ bass for $200 CAD or Peavey Fury for $250 CAD.

I cannot try both as they are both being sold online. Right now that's all I can afford and I need the bass asap as my friends band wants to me try out for them.

What do you think?

I'd say, have a look at Squier Sonic P. Many people (including me) with a lot more expensive instruments are fond of it. You get a P with a J neck. It plays and sounds good, and you can upgrade the electronics later.

Unless that Peavey is broken I’d take it all day long. Those can be quality MIA basses.

The affinities appear to be a higher end bass but is that the case? Also, my friend randomly has pj Seymour Duncan baselines pickups I could put it seamlessly.

ask for a pic of the back of the neck. Check the grain pattern, the straighter it is from tuners to base the better chance it will stay stable. You can make the $200 bass sound like a $2000 bass but it needs a good neck.

Not really. Actually, all Squiers of today are pretty much the same in terms of woods and hardware. Main differences are cosmetic. With the CV-series you may get a better pickup, but at that price or lower you'll be able to upgrade the Sonic with American PU's and electronics, that will be much better still.

An American Peavey Fury is far superior to a Squier unless it is one of the old Korean Squiers.

The Squier Affinitys can be hit or miss - some are great and some are bad. The Peavey will be more of a hit or hit - they're pretty consistently great, some might only be good, but rarely bad. The Fury is worth the extra $50 if you can afford the extra $50.

I’m a big fan of Fender products but in your situation with a tight budget, no doubt I would go with a Peavy Fury, if it’s made in USA, of course.

The only thing is that you need to make sure the neck is in good condition and the truss rod is working fine.

The Peavy Fury made in USA are very high quality instruments that are built to last forever.
The neck on these basses is a real pleasure to play and even with their stock pickups, they cut in the mix just like a real p bass.

A Squier Classic Vibe is also a good choice though but the neck on a USA Peavy Fury will probably be more stable and reliable over time, IMO.

I'm a big fan of Squier and if you said it was a Classic Vibe I'd say go for it. But between the Affinity and the US Peavey, the Peavey is the way to go.

HOWEVER having said that, each instrument is going to come with its own individual set of strengths and weaknesses and you need to do whatever you can to avoid getting stuck with a used bass that has a major problem. These would include: warped neck, frets so worn or uneven that it needs a fret job just to be playable, truss rod broken or maxed out, non-working pickups or electronics. Most of the other stuff that might go wrong is cheaper or more easily fixed.

If the Peavey has a working truss rod and can be intonated and played with decent action and no buzzing up and down the neck, it's a no-brainer to get the Peavey.
