I have a mid 90's Peavey Fury (P-Bass style). The P-Bass style pickup screws directly into the rout in the body (rather than through the pickguard). There is some sort of foam on the back of pickup that is supposed to compress as the mounting screws are tightened and the pickup lowered. Over time that foam has gotten hard and will no longer compress, and I'm having trouble getting the pickup height adjusted the way I'd like it.
Is there any trick to getting that foam off and replacing it with springs (one on each mounting screw)? Can I safely scrape it off? Should I use some sort of solvent, like denatured alcohol? Any better suggestions?
