Peavey fury questions please

I have a 90's one. It's light. Thin neck, very comfortable. It plays well. One thing, the frets ends were popping out of mine last winter and some frets lifted and had to be glued down. I've spent more than I paid for it in repairs. You could say that it was from the lack of humidity, but my other guitars/basses were fine. Tuners are just OK. Buzzes a bit. Scratchy pots, had to replace. A little neck heavy. While being pretty solid, they cut some corners. It's made in the USA, but it's really on the low end of USA made....not to be confused with other American instruments. That said, it's a good beater bass, certainly gig-worthy, so I'm keeping it around. It gives you that P bass sound that you can't go wrong with.

I would agree with a previous post.....don't pay what some people are asking for them. I've seen them for $400. No. More like $200, in really good shape. Somewhere, I think somebody pumped them up as an awesome American bass equal to others, but at a lower price. That's quite a bit of hype. It's really cool to get a USA instrument for that cheap.......but, I will go out on a limb and say that any other company's USA built bass is better than a USA Peavey Fury.

Although my 90s Fury is a bit nicer than the one you describe, I've owned others that weren't as nice as my current one... Overall, I would totally agree with your last paragraph - nailed it, actually...

If I end up liking this bass when it comes in, what would be some good pickups to up grade too , and are there after market tuners that would be lighter, work better out there that would fit the fury ? I hope I like it, if not , I have a friend that seems to buy all the Peaveys he can find and keep them, will be a easy flip , but I hope I really love it !

I have never felt the need to "upgrade" any US Peavey bass tuners - they've all been of good to excellent quality... Regarding pickups - that would depend on what sound you're going for... I swapped out the pickups in my current Fury for Seymour-Duncan SPB-1s, then went back to the originals - they pretty much nail the tone of my all original '76 P bass...

Try the stock pickup, you might just like it. If the balance isn’t good put on some Hipshot Ultralights.

That's what I was thinking on the tuners if I thought it needed a little weight trimmed off , and if it had a slight neck dive .

I know it can be hard to wrap your mind around the notion, but the Fury, and other USA Peaveys can be had for cheap prices, but they are not cheap basses. A Fury can hang with a MIA Fender in terms of tone, whether you like the neck, or anything else, is a matter of taste, not quality.

I have two Fury's. One has the slanted Super Ferret pickup which I hope to get refinished some time & the traditional P-bass style. You cant go wrong with any of the MIA Peavey's, in my opinion

Agreed 100% on all of the above - the 3 US Peaveys I currently own play and sound fantastic... If blindfolded, I doubt I could tell the difference between my Fury and my '76 P, and my Foundation 5 is one of the best sounding passive 5ers I've ever played... The 80s Foundation 4 with the Super Ferrites truly lives up to it's rep as a "Jazz on steroids"... I think where this sort of thing comes off the rails is when some people try to make the claim that these basses meet or exceed the build quality of US Fenders - they definitely don't IME, and I've owned a BUNCH of both... IMO, US Peaveys don't reach that level 'til you get to the Cirrus line - and those are as well built as any other mass produced bass on the market, IMO...

I have a 92 Fury and it is a great bass. Sounds just like a p bass. Great quality, amazing value. Like others have said the neck is super thin. Thinner than even a j bass at the nut but the fretboard is pretty flat. Still a great bass, mine is barely 8lbs.

I own one. It’s the bass I always grab if I’m jamming with others. It’s simple, well made and light. I love the pencil thin neck. I guess you would call it my main bass.

The neck on my fury is the reason I bought my Ibanez sr800; both are a similar profile.

Ha. Snap. My own two favorite instruments are a Fury P-bass I restored in a sunburst and an early 90s SR820. Love those thin necks!
