Peavey G-bass? Opinions?

I think the G may be devalued because it gets lumped into the same category as Foundations and Furys.
There were 'zillions' of Foundations & Furys produced and their value on the secondary market reflects this. There were very few G Basses made.
I don't think a store selling a G for under $400 translates into their real value. Maybe the store just wanted to move it quickly. Maybe the store assumed it's value to be about the same as a Foundation.
Same goes with a private seller.
If the G was being made today, it'd probably have a US MSRP of somewhere in the $1300 to $1400 range. They began at $799; in late 1999 they had a US MSRP of $920.
To say a good one is only worth $300-ish is insane!
The Vintage Guitar Price Guide is a respected resource. You will find vintage Gibsons, Fenders, etectera, in reputable shops, all listed at figures similar to those in the book.

I have a Cirrus. Peavey has made some real cool toys.

I just bought a G-Bass at my local music store for $119.95. It's got some dings, but other than that it's still in really good shape. The serial number sticker on the back of the headstock is long gone, but I found the number 75694 on the heel of the neck. Is that the serial number or something different?

Possibly, but you may also check on the back of the battery cover or control cavity cover. I've seen them put the serial number there.

That's not the serial number. Not enough digits. Do what NicJim said and check under the back plates.
$120 for that bass isn't a steal. It's a super steal.
NicJim just clued me in to a G bass 5 string being sold at a guitar center in California. As far as the store told me the only real problem was a missing screw from the neck joint, which I'm fairly confident I can replace. This bass with shipping was 300 bucks. Honestly even if the electronics need cleaning and work I feel like I got a deal.
I almost bought that bass last week. Sat staring at the ad with the phone in my hand, but didn't pull the trigger. That bass was a fantastic deal.
Funny you should say that. There's a GV priced at $399 at GC online. But it has the super sparkly holoflake finish.
Ohhhh!! I LOVED my holoflake finishes on the G and G-V I had! If it wasn't for my BrownWoodPhobia, I would probably still have both of those. I don't what it is, but I just really don't care for pau ferro, rosewood, or any other fretboard material that is brown. Too bad (for me) they never made the G or G-V with a black fretboard like my Fury has. THAT would be BADA$$!!
G-basses seem to be a little more tricky to find in Europe than the US. Especially in "regular" colors rather than the holoflakes.
A little update here. I just found another G-bass for sale, i Sweden. Even locally, as it turns out. It´s in the black sparkly finish. Perhaps not my favourite, but the seller only want's 2500 SEK for the bass, roughly 340 USD. Perhaps not cheap by US standards, but it is by far the cheapest G-bass I have ever seen i Sweden, or even i Scandinavia. We are talking about the details now, hopefully we can put a deal together.
Sadly, since I last wrote here I have had to sell my old G-bass, due to lack of money coupled with dentist bill, broken car etc. I have really missed it, so I really, really wan't this deal to work out. Wish me luck!

Always wanted a G bass but could never find one locally to test out, until today! Bought a green metallic one in near perfect condition, still has the plastic on the cavity plate and battery cover. This thing is awesome.

By coincidence I got a Peavey bass from Portland,OR myself on Thursday, mine had to travel 10,500 miles to Scotland though
The G-bass ran from 1997 to 2002. The usual list everybody uses to date serial numbers only runs to 1995
so an email to Peavey CS should help date your bass.

kodiakblair, that is awesome. Did you buy it on Reverb? I'm in love with my G bass and really dig the carbon fiber neck and 35" scale length. Now I just need to find a second one as a backup.
The only Peavey I was missing was the RJ-IV. Google search showed one in Centaur Guitar, Portland,OR.
I'll keep my eyes peeled for a G-bass and give you the heads-up on any I spot
G basses are incredibly good instruments. Well, at least the GVs are. That's why I'm hoarding them.
So, time to bump up this old thread! Today I pulled the trigger on my third G-bass. It's finished in solid black and it's on it's way to me right now. Super exited!
