Peavey Grind5 BXP upgrade/repair - many questions

Admission - I know next to nothing about pickups and the electronics associated with them, but have done a LOT of soldering, amp and speaker repair, etc., and have a nodding acquaintance with schematics, DMM, oscilloscopes, etc.

Ok.. the questions re/ the bass in the thread title, new to me as of a month or so ago...

1. Truss rod - I've made some adjustments, and the neck feels pretty good now, but the adjustment nut (a hex) is dangerously closed to having the hex socket stripped and I'd like to replace it. I'm pretty sure I read that the truss rod in this bass is a "dual action," and that the nuts are "captive" and can't be removed. I'm hoping that isn't true. I have full sets of good quality SAE and metric hex wrenches from the various bench and garage work I do; it's not a question of having the correct size. No matter what I try, it's either too big or there's a slight amount of play and the wrench slips if I'm not REALLY careful. Any advice? CAN the nut be replaced and, if so, how, and what is the correct replacement specs for the nut?

2. Electronics - I like the way the neck feels, and I have the action set nice and low, buzz-free along the entire neck. BUT.. the bass just sounds like it has a head-cold. Kind of stuffy, no life, just kind of blah. Again, based upon reading, the pickups seem to be regarded as the weak link on this bass. Interested in learning, and have read a few of the upgrade threads on this forum and elsewhere, but still have questions about the conversions...

A) When going from the existing passive pickups to active pickups, is a separate onboard preamp required, or does that usually come with the pickup itself? When one purchases pickups, new or used, is there anything else necessary in order to install and use them?

B) The varieties of pickups available, and control schemes, is dizzying. How's a guy make the first decision? I see EMG40 pickups being recommended in various threads for this bass... but which one?!? I like the control layout on my Alembic Epic5 (vol/blend/bass/treble), not crazy about the current re-wired-by-PO layout on the Grind5 (vol/tone/blend). I've seen vol/blend/bass/treble/mid-with-push/pull switching for frequency point and a switch or push-pull for active/passive as a control scheme, and that appeals to me, but is it overkill?

C) The bass currently has four pots. I haven't opened it up to take a look. I do have a router and a Dremel, and am not concerned with altering the bass; I picked it up cheap, mostly to learn how to play frets, but now want to use it to learn more about electronic modifications, too. Worth doing, or stick with the four original holes, leave well enough alone, and forget about active (or is there room to go active without extensive body modification)?

3. Hardware - The tuners are lame. They don't turn real smoothly, and make it difficult to get the tuning dead on since they kind of "chatter/stick" as you try and nail the pitch. Kind of like poorly fitted violin/viola/cello pegs. What size/spec tuners would I need to get for this bass? Same comments on the bridge - the string height adjustment is bottomed out on a few of the strings, and I'd like to go a little lower yet (and it's not a question of the truss rod adjustment.. that's set pretty well now). It's a through-body string design, but the PO has the strings mounted on the bridge. I'd like to replace the bridge with a better, more easily-and-widely-adjustable design, and retain the through-body stringing feature of the bass. Again, recommendations?

This is my backup/learn-new-skills el cheapo bass, and I don't really want to sink mega bucks into it. Would love to pick up some appropriate used stuff to tinker with that would result in significant improvements. Recommendations for what to keep my eyes out for, as well as offers from anyone who has stuff lying around they want to sell that would work well, are all very welcomed, as is any help with the truss rod nut issue.

Good descriptions but some pics may help. I guess the key is to get the thing functional at minimal cost, eh?

I'll start: I've taken my Dremel grinder wheel to an oversized hex key and custom "shaved" to an exact fit. In a pinch, a closely-fitting torx can be jammed into place. Under extreme duress, I've notched / slotted TR nuts to accommodate a FH screwdriver

Thanks fore the reply, Riis, and looking forward to hearing more from you or anyone else. Perhaps I'm too wordy. I found a helpful but unbelievably slow-paced video from Matitock Strings going through a Peavey Grind, and it appears the truss nut is a 10/32 thread, and is removeable. There's enough bite left that I think I can get it out and order a new one now that I know the spec. THAT part may be solved.

Also have learned that an onboard preamp can be used with passive pickups, including the existing stock ones.

Would love to get a specific recommendation or two and/or offers to sell used for...

1. Replacement bridges that folks have used that work well for this bass and retain the through-body string mounting capability.

2. Pickups that folks have used or are using on this particular bass that fit well, sound good (more open, less nasal than stock), and don't break the bank.

3. A set of tuners with the same criteria (fit well, work better than stock, and don't break the bank).

Thanks for any ideas. I THINK I've read pretty much every thread on this forum and elsewhere on the internet about updating the Indonesian Grind5 models, but can't seem to home in on anything that mentions specifics.. "I did this using this, and it works well".. A lot of "well, this might work... have you tried this...? Oh, never mind, I sold the bass"...
 
Before you go to far, a few simple ideas. My understanding is these used a proprietary wrench for the truss rod. See if you can get one. Try adjusting the pickup height before you replace them. Sounds like they could be too for from the strings. If the bridge works I would leave it alone for now. It does sound like new tuners would be an improvement.

As for pickups and electronics, what kind of a sound are you looking for? You can spend a lot of time and money changing things if you don't have a clear idea what you want.

Let's put out one fire at a time. If a single-acting TR nut, remove it, measure, and order a replacement. We'll then move on to other sub-functional components like the machine heads.

Thanks to you both for the help and suggestions. I placed an order earlier today for a few sets of strings (Rotosound TruBass 88 for a new Peavey SRH500F and a set of extra long rounds for this bass) to see if new strings capable of using the through-body mounting help the bridge issues and improve the sound. When they get here, I'll pull the existing set off, try and remove the truss nut and pickups, see how much room is in the control cavity, and take/post some pics.

To answer the questions posed re sound and bridge...

I'm looking for fuller, richer sound.. more bottom and more top. Right now, the bass sounds like Willie Nelson (thin and nasal) and I want early Gino Vanelli crossed with Johnny Hartman (deep and resonant with effortless high end free of harshness).

Bridge - the G height is good but the saddle is at the bottom of its range and I'm worried the tiny Allen screws will come loose and fall out. The D and A are still too high, and I can't seem to get them any lower, despite there appearing to still be slight gaps at the bottom of the saddles (which ride on a stepped base plate). I could always reshape the saddles, but its a cheap looking/feeling bridge anyway and I wouldn't mind upgrading.

Peavey Grinds use a 4mm hex key. Peavey stopped using their bent coat hanger TR around 1994, these Grinds were released in 2004.

Afraid I can't help too much with the bridge, I swapped the one on my 4 string Grind for a Sung Il BB01 and lived without through body strung.

Grinds shipped with a couple of bridges, early versions had mono saddles then they moved to the Sung Il BB 285. Luckily swapping the bridge is easy, just look for one with through body string option and 18mm spacing.

2. Pickups that folks have used or are using on this particular bass that fit well, sound good (more open, less nasal than stock), and don't break the bank.
This is kind of difficult, nearest sized aftermarket brand name pickups are either EMG 40 or EMG 45.

I didn't use EMG myself. I bought empty rosewood shells from eBay, loading them with Warman Jazzbar humbuckers. The rosewood shells were a tiny bit small, 1.5mm gap round all sides :( With hindsight I'd have bought empty soapbar shells from eBay and loaded those with the Warmans instead

If you fancy fitting a preamp, again Lady Luck smiles on you. There's plenty of room in the control cavity for a preamp and the battery. I went with a simple 2 band/Vol/Balance from Ty @ Guitar Fuel. He offers plenty of choices.

Peavey had a thing for copies of Gotoh GB-7s, even their flagship US Cirrus got GB-7 copies :laugh: Being quite old now, Gotoh revamped the GB-7 and it's now the GB707. If you find Gotoh too rich for your blood, Wilkinson WJB-750 also fit :thumbsup:

OK.. as promised, I had some time today to take things apart, take some measurements and pics, and just in general try to learn more about this stuff. Here's a few shots of the bridge, hopefully showing more clearly what I've been trying to describe... top view first. Note that the height adjustment hex bolts on the G string are unscrewed and sticking out of top of the saddle a great deal, while all of the other strings' adjustment bolts are flush or recessed. The pic after this one will show why it might be a problem...

OK, this pic shows the string height better. The G is as low as it goes, and it IS very low, but still plays cleanly. Note the height of the bolts, indicated by the blue lines. The D and A are much higher than they need to be, and I'd like to lower them. Just loosen the bolts indicated by the magenta arrows, you say? yeah... well... wait for the next pic...

The next pic shows the dilemma. Even though the adjustment bolts for the G string are backed all the way out, to the point where they're loose, there's still a gap between the bottom of the saddle and the bridge base. But, OK, the G string plays fine, so whatever. BUT.. there's NO gap between the D and A string saddles and the base... I can't go any lower. Looking at this pic close up, I JUST noticed that the G saddle is much thinner than the other saddles... hmm... is this stock, or did a PO grind down the G saddle? OR... is the G saddle in the wrong place, and should be swapped for one of the other saddles? What gives? How do I get the D and A lower? The neck is ALMOST flat now... very very little relief.

The parallax of my cheapo phone distorts a lot, so it's hard to tell from the pic, but the "0" of the scale on teh ruler is centered directly over the center of the G string. Measuring from the centers of each string, the spacing sure seems to be 17.5mm between the top three strings (G/D and D/A) and 18mm between the bottom three strings (A/E and E/B). Is that possible, or am I measuring wrong? In any case, whatever it is, doesn't bother me from a playing standpoint. Just curious. Yes, the G and D I moved from the bridge to through-body because the strings that are on the bass are long enough to do so. The A, E, and B are too short. I have a new set on order.

OK... that's the bridge stuff. Here's the pickups....

They're about 5-6mm below the strings. I took out the four screws holding them in, and there's two blocks of compressed foam underneath each pickup. I gently screwed the screws in JUST until they made contact with the countersunk surface of the pickups, but didn't gain any height. Is the adjustment procedure to shim the pickups higher with different pieces of foam? Are they already as high as they should be?

OK.. on to the controls and cavity. No offense to the previous owner who DID inform me he had redone the controls from the stock V/V/T/T to V/Blend/Tone, but I've got to say this is some of the worst soldering I've ever seen... worse than my first attempts as a 12 year building a Heathkit AM radio. Still... it works, so I guess no harm no foul.

Here's the circuit he used based upon tracing it..

Based upon a similar circuit I found on the bestbassgear site ( https://www.bestbassgear.com/wiring-diagrams/volume-blend-tone.pdf ), the circuit seems legit except for way the jumpers on the blend control are hooked up. On my bass, the jumpers run from the leftmost to rightmost tab on the same row of three tabs. The circuit on the bestbassgear site runs the jumpers from the leftmost of one row to the rightmost of the OTHER row, and vice versa. Does it matter? Also, I'm unsure what the value of the capacitor is; the way it's mounted, I can't get a good look at the face with the specs, although I can see it's rated at 200V. That should do it! ;)

Here's some pics of the cavity. Those of you who are fussy about soldering and have weak stomachs, have a trashcan handy...

The wires from the pickups are shielded coax, as is the wire from the volume control to the jack. The shields and other ground terminations are soldered at various places directly to the copper foil. Is that standard practice? I'd be inclined to use a small screw w/ a lockwasher tab, and solder all grounds to the same connection at that tab. Also, since we're talking about grounds, the bestbassgear diagram shows ground wires soldered to the housings of the volume and tone controls, which are also connected in series to the two aforementioned jumper wires on the blend pot. Those are not present on my bass. Are the pot housings grounded anyway by physical pressure against the copper foil? Anything here, other than just sloppy work, that needs to be corrected? What value should the cap be?

.. I don't know if this is an issue or not... the compartment cover has a shielding plate on it, but at each screw hole there's a square piece of rubber that prevents any mating with the copper foil. Is that intentional and smart, or should the shielding plate mate with the copper foil?

OK.. I guess that's all the questions!! Rip it all out? Try the $20 Amazon onboard pre from another thread just for fun? Ignore it all, shut up, and just play bass? Save my pennies and buy good stuff? I DO like this bass.. it's got "good bones," as is said in some circles. Nice neck, fairly light, well-balanced.

If you remove the G saddle and examine the underside, it may become evident it's been subjected to a grinder. I would have no trouble taking files to the balance of the saddles and mod'ing the slots if all other parameters are normalized.

I just ordered the three band Amazon preamp, too.. I thing mentioned in that thread that it was rebranded Ming, and two other folks in the thread had used the two band version and praised it. Worth a shot... Not sure the 5th pot will fit, but we'll see. If not, I'll send it back and try the 2 band.

Still have to address the truss nut. Will do that when the strings get here, too.

Nope & nope. The saddle assembly(ies) run the entire length of the bridge with a lock-down for each...need to see some pics of the bridge's back side. You'll go nuts trying to grind down the entire "sled". Just deepen / shape each slot with a file.

Hmmmm...good point. If the whole sled would need to be ground or filed down, it might weaken it, too, eh? I'll have to take a closer look-see. Messing around with the mating surface where the string meets the saddle scares me more than the bottom of the saddle, but I probably should just get over that....I've "carved"/fitted bridge blanks on violins/violi/celli many times, so I guess this won't be rocket surgery...;)

It's really no different than shaping nut slots. Doubt if you'll remove enough material to jeopardize the integrity.

Reason I asked for the addt'l pics: are there intonation screws on the backside of the bridge assembly or are the saddles held in-place solely by the lock-downs?

There are intonation screws on the backside, and the lockdown screws are what they press against.

Right in the center of NYS....;)...just outside of Syracuse. Good location...can work in Syr, Rochester, Buffalo, Albany, and various smaller destinations easily, and the Rotten Apple is within 4.5 hours if the money or music makes it worth the trip, which it does several times a year. I'm a country boy at heart who loves winter (in terms of locale), which makes reconciling a place I like to live with a place with a lot of work for a jazz player kind of tough, but CNY has worked pretty well for the past couple decades; we've got a couple acres, only one neighbor we can see, forest across the road, and can be on the water or lost in the woods in a matter of 20 minute drives. Typical commute to a gig is 10-30 minutes in our area, with more to Roc/Alb/Buff, but all doable and still home to sleep in my own bed. Life is good!
