Peavey IPR-3000 experience/opinions?

I'm not sure what you're referring to, but bridged its 2980 or so into 4ohms. ;)

If I'm not running bridged, I run 1 cab per channel for about 450w per cab. I save that for coffee house gigs and stuff. Give or take, they've had different spec figures since the amp came out...but yeah, with 8ohm loads it's sub 500w, but it's a very loud sub 500w.

Peavey has listed a number of spec numbers since these have come out. One of the things I did fairly early on was actually talk to Peavey engineering to find out what to expect, and to make sure that I could bridge it.

I think you're confused about the meaning of the numbers you posted.

"930W RMS x 1 at 4 ohms" is the power available when only one channel is in use.

"840W RMS x 2 at 4 ohms" is the power available from one channel when both channels are in use.

To estimate the approximate available power with two channels bridged, 2 x "1490W RMS x 2 at 2 ohms" = 2980.

I'm not sure I know on any other bassists here using them currently besides me. Not many bassists really need 3Kw of power and I'd suggest that its probably more dangerous than good for 99% of them.

You get almost double power for only $90-150 more, and another 1.8 lbs. I'm not sure why more people don't bump up to the 3000 vs the 1600. I know power watts aren't all that, but still . . .

What I ended up getting was flexibility...I can run off of one channel, both channels or bridged and all have enough power to fuel my volume.

Exactly. I'm thinking I could even run one channel for me and one for a small vocals-only PA. Even with 2 bass cabs and 2 small PA speakers, I'd expect I'd have enough power for only a small bump in price and weight.

Now, if I could only find a 1 lb preamp.

The Behringer EP2500 is a little more straight forward I guess?

So you're saying if I only use channel 1 into a 4 ohm load I'll get 930W? If I use both channels into 2 4 ohm cabs I'll get 840 watts?

If for some ungodly reason I need to bridge into my 4 ohm GK NEO 412 (Which has a 1200W capacity)... how many watts into that?
I would need a special cord with 2 speakons to 1 speakon right?
 
Behringer's published specs might be more straight forward, but I'd trust PV's to be more accurate than Behringer's.

Power amps can put out more juice when only one channel has a signal present. (Someone with more technical knowledge will have to explain why that is. I think it has to do with the load on the power supply.)

So, in this case:
4 ohm load on one channel/no signal on the other channel = potentially 930 watts.
4 ohm load on each channel = potentially 840 watts per channel.
4 ohm load w/channels bridged = potentially 2980 watts.

Yes you need to build a special cable to bridge the IPR 1600 and 3000. You also need to tie both channels together with a short jumper and set them each at the same level/gain. I don't think PV really intended the IPR series to be bridged. You will not be able to bridge the (yet to be released) higher output amps.

Thanks for that... this is absolutely why I'm looking at the IPR3000 vs 1600. If 930w isn't enough I'm bringing the second Epifani cab :) I'll always look for a reason to whip out the 610 stack :bassist:
 
The special bridging cable was fairly easy to make, and I'm glad it doesn't look like any other cable. That way when I'm using it, I know I'm using it. :) My channel one speakon terminates with red shrink, my channel two speakon terminates with green, and my out to the cab is blue. Nice and easy...

Before bridging into your 412, I'd want to know what the displacement limited power rating is, rather than the thermal rating. I'm guessing its well below 1200w, in which case, you'll just make your speaker cones jump out of their frames and to their immediate suicidal death.

I have a few speakon cables I could modify... I know the GK cables I have use all 4 posts, its just about making sure they are in the right config

But again, I'd probably NEVER bridge this amp vs use 2 cabs

Are both your cabs 8 ohm? Also, when you play with one cab, do you run bridged or out of one channel?

I'm still on the fence about which power amp I'm going to buy. I was leaning towards the Crown XTi, but after that other thread (pro XLS), I'm uncertain.

Yep. I'm running two fEARful 15's. They're each 8ohms. So if I run 1 cab alone, I don't bridge and it's 470w. If I need more volume, I add a cab and run it with one cab on each side, unless I need a free channel in which case I run both on one side. If I need more volume than the roughly +900w when run that way, I bridge, then I'm getting 2980 total.

Is it easy to bridge the two? I know some require some kind of modification.

Also, how do you like your sound? Can you get good chest pounding, or is it more low and subtle? How would you describe it? The reason I ask is because my plan is getting very close to your setup. I know you can pump a lot of power into those lightweight fEARful cabs, and that's what I like.

And the last question, if I wanted to add a fEARful sub 115 (along with the 15/6), would I have to do anything special (crossover, etc)?
